About Amor et Psyche, Sculpture from Antonio Canova

Louvre Museum, Paris

Visitors of the Louvre Museum in Paris love this sculpture, the famous "Amor et Psyche" from the Artist Antonio Canova, who lived between 1757 and 1822.

The history of the lovers is a very ancient one and can be read in detail in Wikipedia. Cupid et Psyche. In some places the sculpture is called "Cupid et Psyche" or also "Eros et Psyche". i think the name Amor et Psyche is correct.

The sculpture captures the moment Amor returns Psyche from her deadly sleep. After being kissed from Amor she´s awake and back to life. Canova created a marvelous work, where the spectator can realize the gentless of both lovers. The way Psyche huges Amor creates a vivid dynamic composition in pure marble.

There are two original sculptures from Antonio Canova, the one in Louvre Museum and an other in The Eremitage in St. Petesburg. The later was ordered by Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov.

The History of "Amor et Psyche" in Literature

The romantic history of Amor et Psyche is provided on the book "The Golden Ass", from Lucius Apuleius, who lived AD 123/125 till 180 AD. The original novel is written in Latin.

" The Golden Ass is the only surviving work of literature from the ancient Greco-Roman world to examine, from a first-hand perspective, the abhorrent condition of the lower classes. Yet despite its serious subject matter, the novel remains imaginative, witty, and often sexually explicit. Numerous amusing stories, many of which seem to be based on actual folk tales, with their ordinary themes of simple-minded husbands, adulterous wives, and clever lovers, as well as the magical transformations that characterize the entire novel, are included within the main narrative. The longest of these inclusions is the tale of Cupid and Psyche, encountered here for the first but not the last time in Western literature"

The legend of Cupid and Psyche (also known as The Tale of Amour and Psyche and The Tale of Eros and Psyche) first appeared as a digressionary story told by an old woman in Lucius Apuleius' novel, The Golden Ass, written in the 2nd century AD. Apuleius likely used an earlier tale as the basis for his story, modifying it to suit the thematic needs of his novel.

It has since been interpreted as a Märchen, an allegory and a myth.Hendrik Wagenvoort, "Cupid and Psyche," reprinted in Pietas: Selected Studies in Roman Religion (Brill, 1980), pp. 84?92 online.
