Amphibian Ark

I wrote this lens to make people aware of an organization known as Amphibian Ark. It is a joint effort between the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), IUCN/SSC Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG), and the IUCN/SSC Amphibian Specialist Group (ASG). They are people who try to help endangered amphibians of the world. Now, your probably thinking endangered amphibians? Huh? Did you know that a third of the world's amphinians are in danger of extinction? I didn't know that until I was doing research on my african clawed frog. I had never heard of Amphibian Ark, or any chytrid fungus. I just bought a little white frog at Walmart, but you can learn a lot in year.

There are ways to help though. I know there are lots of things that need help, that's part of what makes Squidoo great. I am just asking that you take a look at some of them, it might be easier than you think.

Just So You know

"out of the 6,285 species of amphibians assessed that 1, 895 are threatened with extinction"

These guys need your help

I know you don't know me

But, I am asking for a favor

I know, not everybody is passionate about frogs. Let's be realistic. But, frogs are a good indicator of the overall health of the planet. They were here before the dinosaurs.

So, what I am asking is, that you PLEASE let everybody you know about this lens. You might not like frogs, but maybe someone you know does, and are unaware of the crisis. It doesn't matter if you Tweet it, Stumble it, Digg it, Text it, whatever your thing is. I am just trying to raise awareness on this issue and would appreciate any help. Thank You.

What can I do to help?

There are many different ways to help. I know times are tough right now. The thing is that, when a few people give a lot it helps, but when a lot of people give a little it usually helps even more.

Here are some ways you can help:
1: Join Amphibian Ark and directly donate to the cause.
2: Go to Facebook and Join the Amphibian Ark Cause
3. Download the "goodsearch" toolbar and when you buy some thing at select merchants part of it will be donated!
4. You can also check out eBay Giving Works
5: You can even help with a Visa affinity credit card.

Wow! That's pretty easy huh?

Chytrid Fungus

Let's talk about this Fungus

MountainI won't pretend to be a scientist, because I am not, but in 1999 a new species of this fungi was discovered to infect amphibians(Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis). The earliest records of this fungus were found in a museum specimen in the 1930's. Scientist think it was spread due to commercial trade of Xenopus laevis, african clawed frogs. Ah ha! Now, you know how I found out about Amphibian Ark.

Now then back to the fungus. This fungus causes a disease known as chytridiomycosis. It can spread up to 100 km a year. This stuff is like the swine flu for frogs! That is a lot of big words for lowly lensmaster. I really don't know the symptoms of this disease or how it kills. Like I said, I am not a scientist. The one thing I do know, is that I hate the word extinction. (Except, for maybe fire ants, but that's another story.) I know everything has a purpose, including frogs. You can learn more information if you visit the Amphibian Ark website.

I would like to mention that on the website it will tell you, that just because your frog lives in captivity, all is well. It explains in great detail how to take precautions with your frog. Not only for its sake, but for the sake of other frogs. That is why I stress on my other lens about african frogs, not to get one unless you understand what you are getting. If you get tired of your frog and don't like it anymore, you should NEVER just let it go into the wild. Not all frogs carry this fungus, but african clawed frogs are known to do so.

This lens is for charity

100% of the money made from this lens will be donated to Amphibian Ark!
