Amy Tan Biography and Books

Many of Amy Tan's novels explore the relationships between mothers and daughters. Her most well known work is The Joy Luck Club which was turned into a movie in 1993.

I love the characters in Amy Tan's novels. All are well developed, and as a consequence, it is not uncommon for people to think that her novels are auotbiographical.

Amy Tan and her first novel: The Joy Luck Club

Written after a trip to China with her mother

Amy Tan
was born in 1952 in Oakland, California to Chinese immigrants. Her first novel, the Joy Luck Club, was written after a trip to China with her mother. During this trip Tan gained a new perspective of her mother and her relationship with her, and inspired her to finish a collection of stories that became the novel, The Joy Luck Club.

The Joy Luck Club is not an autobiographical novel as many think. Amy Tan has drawn from the life experiences of her family and those around her and enhanced it in with her own imagination. Some of the stories may have a kernel of truth in them as far as autobiographical content goes, however she is quick to point out that the stories in all of her novels are not, "memoirs disguised as fiction". The stories she writes are "emotional truths". She draws from emotional memories and writes around these truths.

Quote

When I write my stories, I do not use childhood memories. I use a child's memory. Through that child's mind, I am too inexperienced to have assumptions. So the world is still full of magic. Anything can happen. All possibilities. I have dreams, I have fantasies.

At will, I can enter that world again.

The Opposite of Fate

Memories of a Writing Life

The Opposite of Fate is a collection of essays that gives the reader a glimpse into the life of Amy Tan.

Amy Tan explores her thoughts on her writing, her upbringing, racism in writing and her life in general. The chapters are not organized in any chronological system, they meander from the present, to various points in her past and back again.

The Opposite of Fate is non-fiction and could be called an autobiography of sorts, however not in the traditional sense. In her book, Amy Tan puts to rest some of the rumours about her books being autobiographies of her life and her mothers, however the books are clearly influenced by the the events in both of their lives.

I highly recommend The Opposite of Fate to readers of Amy Tan's novels. Her humour comes through clearly, and it is just as enjoyable and comfortable to read as her fictional work.

Amy Tan begins The Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings, a collection of essays that spans her literary career, on a humorous note; she is troubled that her life and novels have become the subject of a "Cliff's Notes" abridgement. Reading the little yellow booklet, she discovers that her work is seen as complex and rich with symbolism.

"Reviewers and students have educated me not only about how I write, but about why I write. Apparently, I wish to capture the immigrant experience, to demystify Chinese culture, to show the differences between Chinese and American culture, to pave the way for other Asian-American writers--and I have a whole host of other equally noble motivations.

The truth is, I write for more self-serving reasons--that is, I write for myself. I write because I enjoy stories and make believe. I write because if I didn't, I 'd probably go crazy."

The group is made up of many very famous authors, including Dave Barry and Stephen King, and play just for the fun of it and often for charity. They enjoy talking about how bad they are, and how much fun they have while perfoming.
