An Oasis of Relaxation

Ranked #35,945 in Home & Garden, #607,063 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund

That boring expanse of grass or unadorned patio should be put to some use, shouldn't it? You've had pay for it after all, but day after day you sit indoors in your climate controlled home because the temperature or weather outdoors just won't cooperate. If you wait for mother nature to offer some good weather you could conceivably wait for eternity; Although, if plan your decorating outdoors carefully, you can have nearly as much control over an outside living space as you do in your home.

Having a nice theme to your new environment will certainly add to your enjoyment of it, but don't let it overshadow functionality. It does absolutely no good to have the worlds greatest patio furniture unless you actually use it.   A good place to begin decorating outdoors will be to consider the things you will require to be comfortable. Naturally you'll want a place to sit, so chairs and love seats will be in order, maybe even a table to set drinks on. Creating a comfortable setting for your furniture however, will be what allows you to gain the most use from it.

Your climate will play a big role in a number of the choices you make. If you live in a warm climate, then shade will be vital. An awning or canopy tent would be one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to achieve this. You may even want to think about a gazebo. These wonderful structures require very little care and will add to the value of your property. Decorative misters and fountains can be used to help keep your outdoor living area comfortable on especially hot days.

If you live in a cold climate then you may want a tent or gazebo with canvas sides. You can purchase a propane heater to keep in your outdoor space that will keep it toasty warm on even the coldest winter days.

If you will be spending your evenings outside, then light will be a must. Outdoor chandeliers, solar-powered accent lighting, and spotlights are all perfect for making the most of a peaceful evening under the sky.

Once you have all of the basics taken care of, then it will be time to personalize this little oasis and give it some character. Statuary has been a favorite of decorating outdoors for thousands of years. You can select beautiful and durable sculptures of stone, metal, or cast resin, to suit just about any taste. Gazing globes are a great accent piece, these lovely glass balls can be prominently displayed to draw attention to particular areas of your yard or patio.

You don't want to forget to plant your favorite types of plants and flowers to add to the aromatic appeal of your retreat. Even a few ornate flower pots scattered about will give both life and sweet smells to your decorating outdoors.

These are all great editions to an outside living space, but your own imagination will be what makes it a truly pleasant place for you to be.
