"Anarchy! Revolution, Justice, Screaming For Solutions, Forcing Changes, Risk, and Danger, Making Noise and Making Pleas!" - John Larson
The Anarchist's... What?
The Anarchist Cookbook, first published in 1970, is a book that contains instructions for the manufacture of explosives, rudimentary telecommunications phreaking devices as well as some dangerous, and in many places illegal, items; while some have merit, other 'recipes' have been shown to be flawed or dangerous or both. It was written by William Powell to protest the United States involvement in the Vietnam War.
Interest in the book continues. In 2009 the magazine Vice published a brief history of the book as well as excerpted recipes. The magazine's sister network, VBS.tv, also broadcast a documentary on the subject.TECH-ARCHY- Beyond the Pages of the Anarchist Cookbook Vice. April 2009
Why I Own This Book
I'm not an anarchist and I'm not much of a cook, but I will admit, I own this book.I bought it in the mid-1980s when I was a freshman in college. Why??? Because I was still in my high school punk mindset and I liked that just the idea of people owning this book pisses other people off, and I was big on pissing other people off on principle at the time.
I've never made any of the recipes in it, nor do I intend to. But I still believe in the exchange of information and freedom of expression. It's why I do things like talk honestly about birth control to teenagers. It's why I tell people that they should register to vote and then actually vote.
I own this book because I can. If you consider owning a book that other people don't like to be anarchistic, then I guess you'd consider me an anarchist. I'm not up for total chaos and I wish the world was a less violent place. But I also believe very strongly in defending the right for people to say what they think.
