Ancestry and Family History

I have always been interested in finding out about my Ancestry and Family History as I only really know my Mother's side of the family, being a product  of one of the 60's "Wild Children" I was conceived in a field, my parents had a Shotgun Wedding which dramatically fell apart 2 years later. and my Father has been conspicuous by his absence ever since!!

Where to start?

I watched a TV Programme about Barbara Windsor and found out that she had Irish roots (As I suspect so have I) and her ancestors left Ireland during the Great Potato Famine and English Ruling classes land grab of the late 19th Century. My interest in the subject increased!!
