Ancient Agora Athens
The modern excavation of the agora in Athens began in part under the direction of T. Leslie Shear, Sr. of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. They continue to the present day, now under the direction of John McK Camp.
After the initial phase of excavation, in the 1950's, part of the agora was landscaped and the Stoa of Attalos was rebuilt to serve as museum and work space - it now houses all the finds from the site.
Ancient Agora
Thission
From Apostolou Pavlou street continue to Andrianou street and you will end up in the Thission district and the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora. The heart of Athenian daily life, the Agora, was the chide meeting place and market throughout antiquity. It was constructed under Pericles and Kimon after the Persian wars and ran between the temple of Hephaistos and the stoa of Attalos.
After numerous changes and much rebuilding it fell into disuse during the Byzantine era and attracted little attention until archaeologists began their digs in 1931.
On the west side are the ruins of the Tholos Vouleuterion and Metroon.
Arcades - the stoa of Zeus, the Royal Stoa and the Stoa Poikile - encircled the area which was traversed diagonally by the Panatheniac Way, the ceremonial road.
