Ancient Greece Inspired Decorations

What comes to mind?

What comes to mind when you think of Ancient Greece?

  • Mythology - Gods and Goddesses
  • The Parthenon
  • Acropolis
  • Robes/Togas
  • Laurels
  • The Mediterranean
  • Olives
  • Balustrades
  • Columns
  • Fountains
  • Gardens

These are just a few of the ideas that come to my mind. The trick is to build off these ideas to come up with your decor. Decor includes ANYTHING that you will use to "transport" your guests into the theme world you are creating. Centerpieces, wall decor, entrance decor, vignettes/scenes, ceiling decor, and buffet decor to name some.

Themes themselves are not hard to come up with. Finding decor ideas is where the trouble can start! Thinking Greece, let's see what we can come up with using these keywords and the imagines they conjure.

Columns as Candles

Greek Style Decor

These column candles are 12.6" tall and a gorgeous addition to any Greek themed parties and events. They only burn 1/3 of the way down so you still see the column effect. They are available in black or white and come individually gift boxed.

Use one as part of a centerpiece. Add a old scroll and lean a laurel against it and you have a simple and elegant centerpiece. (If you plan to burn the candle, make sure nothing is too close to cause a fire.)

Greek Themed Parties (or Weddings) - The Basics

Colors, Flag and Linens

* Greek Flag Colors - The Greek Flag is Blue and White
* Color Scheme - Lots of gold, white and blue
* Linens Ideas - White with a gold or blue ribbon accent or white with a gold lame overlay, white with Greek key ribbon as accent
* Costumes (if appropriate) - Togas or Robes, laurels for your head, gold cording (for costume or hair), sandals/flip flops, capes or overcloths.

Incorporate the above ideas into your overall decor plan and dont' forget the inviations!

Columns and balustrades are a must for any ancient Greek theme. Think of the Parthenon and all the many temples of the Gods and Goddesses sprinkled throughout Greece. Gardens were also played a big part. Create vignettes by using columns at your entrance or behind a stage or head table; make a garden park area complete with balustrades and benches. You get the idea...

Ancient Greece Themed Centerpieces

Using some of the keywords from above, unique themed centerpieces could be made.

  • Consider mixing 3 items like a small (12" or shorter) column, with a laurel and a scroll. Add some ivy or an olive branch.

  • Use Greek Statues or Busts of Gods and Goddesses

  • Use statues of Greek Ruins or buildings like the parthenon

  • Use lots of candles, ivy, olive branches and Greek key design in your centerpieces

  • Name your tables after Gods and Goddess and then use items that depict that God of Goddess

    • Aphrodite - She is associated with beauty, dolphins, doves, swans, pomegranates and lime trees.

    • Zeus - He associated with weather, as his main attribute is the thunderbolt, he controlled thunder, lightning and rain. He was also the ruler of all the Gods.

    • Apollo - The Greek god Apollo was the god of light, order, arts and muses, reason, prophecy. He was the son of Zeus and Leto and the twin brother of Artemis. He is represented as a young and handsome man, sometimes in a chariot, given to him by his father, Zeus.

  • Use Greek Urns as centerpieces

DIY centerpieces are unique. Stand out from the crowd!

Ancient Greece Room Decor Ideas

Remembering our keywords from above, you could make vignettes or scenes of Ancient Greece. For Example:
  • Gardens - Make a garden area using green grass carpet, urns with flowers, concrete bench, fountain, statuary

  • Make it seem that one area is the top of Mt. Olympus. Paper mache a mountain top and use a fog machine to create clouds.

  • Make a "Parthenon" building using columns and a "A" made out of cardboard or corrugated cardboard. Set it on top of the columns.

  • Use a mural of the Acropolis or of the Mediterranean behind a head table, cake table or stage to set a scene.

  • Swag white and gold chiffon, gossamer or other filmy fabric around the room.

Tip

Don't forget to look at thrift stores, second hand stores, garage/tag sales, auctions, in your basement, in your neighbor's garage, in your mom's attic and so on. Sometimes "borrowing" what you need is more possible than you thought. Ask! All they can do is say no...
