What did ancient Greek people eat?

I could make a nice introduction here about Ancient Greece and Ancient Greek Recipes but I think the words of Odysseus in his host Alcinous as described by Homer are the best way to portray the importance of food with siblings and friends in the Ancient Greek World and the significance contemporary Greeks give to family meals, dinners and gatherings even today.

"When there is happiness among all the people; when festers in the house, sitting in rows, can listen to a singer, while beside them tables are full of bread and meat, and a waiter brings wine from brimming bowls and fills their cups: this seems to me in my heart to be the best of all."

Ancient Greek Recipe

Chicken Stuffed with Olives

ancient greek food - walnuts as basic ingredient of ancient greeks' cookingAncient Greece is known for its tasty and most of all healthy Ancient Greek Food prepared even today by some people, and that's why ancient Greek Recipes are very popular. Here you will find the recipe for chicken stuffed with olives. This one is a simple recipe lacking the numerous spices and it could have been prepared in almost any ancient household. The principle behind it is that the olives would give the chicken their flavour and then be discarded.

Here is the recipe!

Chicken Stuffed with Olives
Serves 2-4 people

Ingredients
6 OZ (170g.) black olives
1 small fresh chicken
2 bay leaves
salt
10 black peppercorns
1 onion
1 carrot
1 celery stalk

Preparation
Chop the olives and stuff the chicken with them. Sew up the cavity with cotton thread or fine cooking string. Place the chicken in a saucepan and cover with water. Add the bay leaf, salt, peppercorns and vegetables. Bring to the boil and simmer for 1 and a half hour until tender. Remove from the water and cool slightly before carving.

Your meal is ready! Bon appetit!
