Ancient Greek Food and Cooking

For the ancient Greeks, food had religious and social meaning, to be shared with family, friends and welcome visitors.

The meat they killed was sacrificial to their gods and was hunted for in the wild. They drank watered down wine to the god Dionysus and asked for blessing from Greek goddesses Demeter and her daughter Persephone when they ate the bread that was baked.

It was only the wealthy that could afford to eat wild boar, game and other wild animals, but this type of food was killed as an offering to the gods at religious festivals and passed around for the poor to enjoy.

Their basic diet was wheat, barley, millet, olive oil and fish, which was sometimes dried, more so than meat which had to be sacrificed. They ate vegetables when they could grow them and olives, figs pomegranates and lemons which grew plentiful and made cheese from the milk of their domestic animals, which were never sacrificed. They considered it unhealthy to drink the milk of the animals.

They harvested honey from the bees to sweeten their bread and made cakes with it, as they knew nothing of sugar at that time.

In the early ancient Greece, ancient Greek food did not have tomatoes, or bananas or potatoes where not sourced at that time.

They ate breakfast in the early dawn and supper was the main meal, they ate closer to sunset.

Only the wealthy ate beef, and pork, but it was sometimes given out to the poor at religious festivals, once the wild boar or cattle was sacrificed in honour of their chosen god, the meat was cooked and handed out.

When guests were invited into homes for dinner parties, is was a men only occasion. The men talked politics and philosophy, and sometimes sang songs and poetry.
