The Importance of Jewelry in Ancient Egypt
Jewelry was very important in ancient Egypt. It was valued for beauty, mystical, and religious reasons.
They associated various metals and minerals with the gods and healing. For instance gold, was associated with Ra god of the sun and silver was associated with Yah the god of the moon. Copper was associated with Hathor, goddess of love, music and beauty. The words the ancient Egyptians used for lapis lazuli and turquoise also meant joy and delight. The scarab beetle which symbolized rebirth was crafted of a wide variety of materials and was used in amulets and on rings.
Earrings were worn by both men and women and by people from all social classes.
The cartouche, the ancient Egyptian good luck charm, was allowed only to be worn by the Pharaoh and was meant to protect him from evil spirits both while he lived and in the after life.
Egyptian craftsmen became adept at copying precious stones. They copied emeralds, amethyst and tigers eye so closely in glass beads that it was hard to tell the difference between the real and the false.

The tomb in the Valley of the Kings was nearly intact when it was found and the discovery sparked worldwide press attention. Thus, Tutankhamen is now one of the most popular and widely recognised of Pharaohs. King Tut ruled 1333 BC - 1324 BC. He began his reign at the age of nine. www.itnsource.com Reuters S30100604

Anubis Pendant on Cord : Egyptian Collection

Anubis Pendant on Cord : Egyptian Collection
"Anubis, God of the Dead, represented with a head of a jackal or simply as a jackal opened the road to the other world and presided over embalmments. After a funeral, Anubis would take the deceased by the hand and introduce him into the presence of the sovereign judges where the soul of the deceased would be weighed. Anubis was the Guardian of Offerings brought to the ceremony by heirs of the deceased and he also guarded the mummy from evil forces in the night. When the body was embalmed, a priest wearing a jackal mask acted as Anubis's representative. He also was the guardian of the Sacred Esoteric Mysteries. The origin of this God lay in the fact that jackals could be heard howling in the desert to the west of the Nile at sunset-at the time when burials took place. Here, Anubis is shown carrying the long 'was' scepter and the crook and flail, symbols of kingship.Sterling Silver Pendant, Approx. 1.5""H on 33"" cord with description card. "

"The scarab beetle rolls its food into a ball, suggesting to the ancient Egyptians the rolling of the all-powerful sun across the sky. Thus the scarab became the symbol of the sun-god. The beetle, which lives underground, was believed to be reborn every day at noon when it came to the surface to take flight. The scarab became the symbol of resurrection and eternal life. To commemorate specific events, a seal was carved in the form of a scarab with the date and event inscribed on its back.Sterling "

I've always loved ancient Egyptian jewelry. There's something about it that seems so mystical. I wouldn't mind having a couple of 2000-year-old headdresses and pectorals, but I guess we'll just have to settle for the modern equivalent. :) Posted September 24, 2008 |
