So what is a SquidAngel?

You may have arrived at this lens because you found a link in your guestbook or you may simply have stumbled across it in your exploration of Squidoo, either way, I hope you find it informative and helpful.

I don't speak for all the Angels, there are quite a few of us and we are all different. Most Angels have their own lenses offering guidance on the standards of lenses they look for when setting out to spread their blessings and it is well worth your while seeking these lenses out and taking note of the content.

Of course, you don't simply have to wait for an Angel to find your lens, you can come looking for us. In the SquidU forum you'll find a section where you can ask for an Angel's blessing if you think you have a blessworthy lens.

In 2009 I served as a SquidAngel from January through August.

Why do we have SquidAngels 

SquidAngels help to ensure that the best lenses and lensmasters rise to the top of the Top100 in their chosen categories.

We do that by looking out for promising lenses and lensmasters with original ideas and spreading our blessings to those lenses, you may even find us joining your fanclub, leaving a comment in your guestbook and giving you a star rating.

We have a special tool we carry around with us as we travel through Squidoo with which we can lever your lens up a little higher in the rankings to help you on your way.

Of course, it's no substitute for going out there and promoting links to your lenses on appropriate websites, forums and discussion boards, you should be doing that anyway to bring traffic to your lenses, but when we see a lensmaster making an effort to produce the best work on Squidoo you can be pretty confident that we will reward that effort.

What does a SquidAngel look for 

Again, I can only really speak for myself, but I do think there are some general indicators which all SquidAngels are looking for.

Personally, the first thing I notice is whether the lensmaster has taken the few minutes necessary to upload a lensmaster photo and fill in their Bio. I want to know about the person making the lenses, their interests, hobbies etc, whatever they care to divulge in their biography. If there is no bio or lensmaster pic I feel disappointed right at the outset.

The next thing I look for is whether the lensmaster has changed the default titles on the modules. If not, I may just fly on past unless the content is really top quality, in which case, I may contact the lensmaster and suggest the improvement which can easily be made by changing 'new text module' to something much more appropriate to the module content. 'New guestbook' is equally annoying as any other default title.

Does the introductory module have a title which catches my interest? Is there sufficient content in that introductory module - use it to tempt me further into your lens. Are there photographs or pictures? Is there a good balance between the images and text? Has the lensmaster used a variety of modules? All these questions go through my mind as I begin to look in detail at any lens.

Above all, I am looking for original work, unique content which draws me into the story you are telling or entertains me in some way. Whether the lens is giving me well presented information, perhaps discussing an issue I was unaware of, or displaying the work of an artist or writer, even if it's your Etsy store or eBay auctions, if the lens is attractively and imaginatively presented it may well get my blessings.

How will I know if I've been blessed 

If you have a guestbook then you may well find that a SquidAngel has passed by and left you a comment there. If they have also blessed your lens the comment may tell you so but many SquidAngels prefer to work quietly without letting you know.

A blessing will give you a boost in lensrank but this is temporary and the effect wears off after a while but, having helped your lens to a boost in rank, we hope you will work to keep the momentum up by improving everything you can within the lens and by making more quality lenses.

You are most welcome to ask for a blessing.

If you think your lens is ready and lives up to an Angel's expectations, pop along and leave your link for the Angels on the SquidU forum.

But beware, if your lens is spammy you may incur an Angel's wrath ... read on ...

Dark Angels? 

... if your lens is full of default titles and you haven't filled in your bio you won't get a blessing from me but that certainly isn't a major crime as you can easily sort those minor issues out.

Along with our powers to do good, SquidAngels also have the power to send a lens spiralling down through the lensranks to oblivion (well, almost) and though we would prefer not to have to use such powers, sometimes it is found to be necessary.

Some lenses are very badly put together, some consist of inappropriate subjects for G-rated lenses, some are copied and pasted many times over with small changes to urls ... these may well make an Angel turn to the dark side and instead of simply passing by your lens, we may exercise our powers to send you into the abyss.

So, beware of incurring the wrath of Angels and make sure your lenses are a worthwhile contribution to the Squidoo community and beyond.

There are quite a few SquidAngels currently on Squidoo and you can find links to all their own lenses by clicking on their images. Many of their Angel lenses have been highlighted with dedicated links and I do recommend that any newbie to Squidoo studies at least a few of those lenses before making too many of their own.

It's much easier to start out right than it is to correct a whole raft of mistakes later.
