A Librarian's Guide to Books on Andersonville Civil War Prison

I'm reading a lot about Andersonville and featuring the books here. When I first heard the horror story of Andersonville in my American history class, I had no inkling that my great-great grandfather was one of the prisoners who suffered there. Even without a personal connection, people are drawn to explore what happened there. Perhaps we can't help poking at this sore spot, hoping to understand how, why and could it happen again?

Actually on a smaller scale some of the same issues showed up in other prisoner of war camps both in the North and the South. Still, Andersonville in Georgia tops the list as the worst of the camps with almost 13,000 men dying within its stockade walls. Here are books for you to find out more about Andersonville or Camp Sumter as it was sometimes called.

Andersonville, the Last Depot

Andersonville: The Last Depot (Civil War America)

This is painful reading, but that is true of any book about the horrors of Andersonville. The documentation is amazing and the pages bristle with footnote numbers (footnotes in the back of the book). You might think that would result in a scholarly tone, but the book is quite readable as Marvel details individual stories to show what happened in Andersonville.

Marvel builds a compelling case for why conditions were so horrific based on circumstances of the war and limitations on supplies and manpower. Since my great-great grandfather almost died there, this surprised me as I was prepared to wholeheartedly condemn the management of the prison for the horrors there. I feel I have a better understanding of the mis-management and physical circumstances contributing to the suffering. (review by Virginia Allain)
