André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra

Over the last few years André Rieu, the waltz king, and his lively Johann Strauss Orchestra has shot to fame, winning numerous awards and topping the classical recording charts. In the UK classical album chart, André Rieu began 2011 with no less than six albums in the top ten! Including the number one spot!!

Not without critics, his orchestra consists of young, enthusiastic musicians, who Rieu encourages to put their heart and soul into the music every time they play. At an André Rieu concert you, the orchestra, the audience, and of course André Rieu, himself, all have fun. Swaying in time to the music, singing along, clapping, jumping up and down, and thoroughly enjoying the musical experience. Critics accuse André Rieu of being populist but that just means people enjoy his performances. I seem to remember that the same criticism was leveled at Johann Strauss when he entertained audiences with live performances.

Amazing Grace

Performed by the Andre Rieu Orchestra & The European Pipe Band

This video from a live performance at the Waldbuehne in Berlin, was uploaded by Christian (Hamburg4U on YouTube). It is probably the most moving version, of one of the most emotionally charged pieces of music, that I have ever heard. Men and women alike, openly cried during the performance.

But I wrote the lens and it's great to get feedback. Any ideas to make this lens about André Rieu even more interesting and useful will be music to my ears.

Viennese waltzes are a delicacy. And one must praise Mr Rieu for putting them back to fame !

I love Strauss but I can understand that Polkas and Waltzes are not everyone's choice of music. That said, André Rieu embraces many different styles of music these days, and I have just added a video of him performing Amazing Grace, along with 300 pipers! At the same concert, he performed a medley of Glen Miller favorites.
