Sitting complacent in my suburban home, I love to indulge in great apocalyptic fiction. Nothing like the cheesy explosion-fests that Hollywood throws out to numb us, good apocalyptic fiction actually makes you think deeply about what makes our world go around, how fragile our social systems really are and what might happen to change it all in one disastrous stroke.
What would you do if our society fell apart? Would you be one of the tough old birds who would adapt or would you cling sobbing to your Lexus and your broken TiVo until it was too late? Think about the world, about life and about yourself in a whole new way.

- Links for Survivalists
- One of the very cool things about apocalyptic fiction is how carefully the authors plot out not only the destruction (it is all meticulously researched and scientifically valid) but also how well they plot out the survival. This is one such site an author might use to figure out what we'd need to know if the world went to hell in a handbasket.
Great Stuff on Amazon
Year Zero
This one goes on top simply because I just finished it. Lyrical, beautiful, very interested in what good does under pressure and how evil can seem good, this book keeps you going and going. A bit slow at the end, but it strives to keep you thinking. Wo
Lucifer's Hammer
The fabulous book that got me into this genre in earnest. Fast-paced, savvy and fun, this gem traces the disastrous effects of a comet hitting the Earth from its discovery several months before impact to the world-altering aftermath.
Nightfall (Bantam Spectra Book)
Delicious, an all-time favorite, tackles questions of what a race does when darkness descends. Metaphors and lessons abound... but don't let that scare you. The action is well-plotted and it's a page turner.
Eternity Road
Lyrical, sad and wistful, this journey takes place after the great Roadmakers (that would be us) have become extinct and their (er... our) descendants have long forgotten them or how their machines worked.
The Postman (Bantam Classics)
If you saw the Kevin Costner film and you think I'm crazy for including this, give it a shot before totally laughing on down the page. Smart, sassy and well-put together, it basically only shares the name with the movie.
Aftermath
As its name would suggest, this is all about the aftermath of Alpha Centauri going supernova (hint: it would fry us). You really care about the characters in this one and yes, there is hope at the end.
Shiva Descending
SUCH good character development on one of the anti-heroes here and good pacing over all. More meteors and cooked oceans.
Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster
Not exactly apocalyptic fiction (the whole world doesn't end, only the world of the people on this doomed Everest expedition) this well-written book will still fascinate the apocalyptic fiction fan. Told first-person, this true story of the infamous 1996
War of the Worlds (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)
War of the Worlds gives you not just a white knuckled ride but leaving you pondering about our world, ourselves and the fragile interconnection of all things. It is one of Steven Speilberg's best films. This movie does a great and subtle
