Anemones! With Friends Like These, Who Needs Anemones?
Relatives of the corals and sea jellies (jellyfish), box-jellies, and hydra, the 900 types of sea anemones comprise a group of oceanic bottom-dwelling, predatory animals of the order Actiniaria of the Class Anthozoa, of the Phylum Cnidaria. Like their other Cnidarian cousins, the sea anemones also have tentacles containing stinging cells as a way to repel attackers and a way to stun and paralyze prey so it can be eaten.

Although Not As Nasty As Jellyfish Stings, Anemones Can Also Deliver a Zap!
Unlike the jellyfish, hydra, and box-jellies, however, sea anemones do not swim very often (although they can swim in a fashion--usually by unsticking their basal pad (their "foot") and then undulating and twisting and flexing to awkwardly move through the water.

Although most anemone stings are not harmful to humans, there are a few that can deliver nasty stings. Sometimes, the stings aren't powerful enough to go through your "thick" skin of your hands or the bottom of your feet... but if you brush against an anemone with your more thin and delicate skin such as the side of your arm or your belly or back, you will experience the stings.
