About Angel and the Badman

The starring roles in Angel and the Badman belong to John Wayne and Gail Russell. Wayne portrays Quirt Evans, an injured gunslinger who is given shelter and nursed back to health by a Quaker family. Russell portrays Penelope Worth, a daughter in the Quaker family.

The gunslinger finds himself faced with a choice between his old ways, and the style of life as practice by Penelope and her family. In the meantime Marshal Wistful McClintock (portrayed by Harry Carey) continues in his relentless pursuit of gunslinger Evans.

Angel and the Badman is one of several movies in which Wayne starred for Republic pictures during the 1940s. Other Republic Pictures movies in which Wayne was featured include The Fighting Seabees, The Fighting Kentuckian, and Sands of Iwo Jima.

About the Cast

Actor Bruce Cabot, who portrayed the man who killed gunslinger Quirt Evans' father, first met John Wayne while they were filming Angel and the Badman. They became friends, and went on to appear together in several more movies, including McLintock! , Big Jake, The War Wagon, The Green Berets, Chisum, and The Comancheros.

Noted charactor actor Harry Carey (Marshal McClintock) also appeared with Wayne in Red River and The Shepherd of the Hills. Actress Gail Russell joined with Wayne in a 1948 movie from Republic Pictures, Wake of the Red Witch.

About the Director

Angel and the Badman was written and directed by James Edward Grant. He and Wayne went on to collaborate several more movies, including The Alamo, Donovan's Reef, The Comancheros, Sands of Iwo Jima, McLintock!, and Hondo.

Richard Hageman, who provided the music for Angel and the Badman, also provided the film scores for John Wayne movies directed by John Ford, such as Stagecoach, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Long Voyage Home, and 3 Godfathers.
