What Does It Take to Get Blessed by a Squidoo Angel?

Being a Squidoo angel is both an honor and a responsibility. Thank you to the Squidoo team for selecting me to serve along side a group of such outstanding lensmasters as those you have chosen to be the current angels. Many of my feelings are captured by this beautiful Cherub as I feel young (to the angel program), thoughtful (as I take time to determine if a lens is worthy of my blessing or in need of [hope not] a ding), and ready to take on a new challenge.

Squidoo Angel is a volunteer position. As an angel, I have the responsibility to help make Squidoo a better place for all lensmasters. I do this by seeking out great lenses and giving them a "blessing" - a thumbs up. This gives a small boost in lens ranking. If several angels bless the same lens, a larger boost. We also can ding the lenses that violate the Squidoo TOS. In the end, we help to bring the best lenses to the top of the rankings. In exchange, we all get a better, and more widely trusted platform for our writing.

So, what are the criteria for a "blessed" lens? While we are given the basics, the fine tuning is up to each angel. Read on to see what this angel looks for before I bestow a blessing.

A Bit More Detail on What I like to See:

I imagine you are thinking, "that's all very good, but not terribly helpful." So here are my top 10 tips to creating better lenses. If you are looking for a blessing from this angel, try and include as much of these things as appropriate:

* Begin with an interesting, attractive and eye-catching introduction, and be sure to include artwork or photo.

* Change the defaults - this includes the bio, bio photo and default module titles.

* Keep it interesting! Use a variety of different modules as well as photos or artwork throughout your lens. Add a bit of color, formatting and creativity.

* Write original content. Write what you know. Make it personal by including some "I" statements. Credit any quotes or photos which you have permission to use.

* Include interactive modules, such as a guestbook and either a poll, duel, voting plexo or caption contest.

* If you recommend a product, tell me why.

* Proof read, publish and then have a look at the final product to be sure it is what you expected.

Here are some of my favorite learning tools:

Don't Do This!

So, now that you know what I am looking for, here is the opposite. This list provides a few things which will stop me from giving you a blessing (and the first two on the list will get a ding):

* Don't Spam
* Don't write about illegal topics or topics which violate Squidoo Terms of Service
* Don't violate copyright or copy another person's work
* Don't leave default module titles or the default bio on your lens
* Don't forget to proofread

Here are three great lenses from by Squidoo editor-in-chief Megan Casey which might help clarify some of the "Don'ts".

I featured this calendar, as this is the one I will have hanging over my desk for the next 16 months. I selected it as the lovely representations of cherubs in classical art will remind me of the importance of my Squidoo Angel duties.
