Angel fabric

Angel fabric

At Christmas angels seem to be everywhere! So, I thought I would showcase some of the angel fabrics Brick House Fabrics has had.

Remembering that fabric companies are focused on getting their fabrics onto the furniture of companies like The Pottery Barn, it is no wonder that there aren't many home decorating fabrics with angels! Most of the fabrics with angels use them as a pattern element, not the featured design motif. More angels are seen on quilting and craft fabric than on home decorating fabric.

It is interesting to note that all of the angel fabrics Brick House Fabrics has had have been toile fabric. And, we have only had one fabric with a true angel, rather than a cherub, on it.

CHERUBS and CHERUBIUM

Blame it on the Renaissance

Today, when people speak of a cherub they are usually referring to a modern cherub. An angel Cherub is a strong, fierce being with either two or four heads. The modern cherub is a combination of the angels of the Gods and Goddess of mythology and the Italian putti. And came about because of the Renaissance painters.

The angel one sees on modern fabrics are usually the modern cherub. But now: let's see those angel fabrics!

A CHERUB by an unknown artist

Stroheim & Romann fabric

Neoclassical cherub fabric

This Stroheim & Romann fabric had the cutest cherub going! This classic pattern had epergnes holding fruit and flowers, supported by the classic head of a goddess. Swirling arabesques and acanthus leaves scroll upward, with small details of flowers, and a pair of crossed rings that bring Ezekiels wheel within a wheel to mind. The wheel within the wheel being the angels of the first Sphere called Thrones.

This angel toile fabric was done in carmel on pine green. The cherub was only in the mid-line of the fabric, as shown in the last picture. The ones on the edges were not whole cherubs. So, one had to cut this at 50" to get the cherub centered!

This is now out of print.

ANGEL TOILE FABRIC

This had cherubs and mer-angels!!

This P.Kaufmann fabric also has the cute cherub! And it has Mer-angels! Yellow and blue stripe form the background for this classic toile. This has neo-classic elements- torchieres, eperge, doves, flowers, crossed arrows, cornucopias filled with fruit, laurel leaves forming swags, and more. And, again- that very cute cherub sits on the top of an eperge filled with flowers, which is being supported by two Mer-angels with entwined tails! This is out of print.

GREEFF ANGEL CHERUB TOILE FABRIC

A four season toile fabric with angels!

A classic Greeff fabric that everyone loves! This shows three small angels during the different seasons of the year. In spring they are in a garden; one has a basket of flowers on his head. During the summer they are shown harvesting grain. Fall shows them with trellised grapes; one is holding a bunch of grapes, while the one on the ground is holding out a glass! And in winter one is pushing the other in a sled on the ice, while the third has taken a tumble!

The vignettes are done in cream, beige, gold and set on green with deepr green highlights. They are framed with scrolling acanthus leaves which end in vases shaped like cornucopias filled with roses. And filling the spaces between the vignettes are more roses, daisies, and other flowers, delicately done, tied with ribbons, and ending with tasses. The colors are delicate, and the whole has a background of soft vanilla cream. It is exquisite!

ANGEL CHERUB FABRICS

The four season toile fabrics

Below is a small part of a Stephanie Hoppen fabric. This was a companion print to a fabric that showed the four seasons. This has a ribbon forming stripes. And there are different vignettes- the angels harvesting wheat with a cycle, and also grapes.

Novelty fabrics with cherubs

Quite a few toile fabrics have angels as small design elements. They are often part of a statue. Below are a few we have had.

This blue teastained toile was a vintage fabric found on a buying trip. It was not branded on the side, so the maker is unknown. One can just see the cherub on the fountain, tipping the container that forms the fountain.
