Well They Look Like Angels to Me!
You didn't know there were Angel Orchids did you? Not many people do, so that's not too surprising. My husband grows a lot of them, but HE doesn't even know what they are!
Well, I do...and...now; so do you!
Perhaps it's my just my imagination, but a lot of his orchids look like ANGELS to me! All right, I have never seen an angel, and I'd probably be prostrate on the ground, if I did - cancel the "probably" - but that's what they look like, to me!
You tell me - ANGEL ORCHIDS, or not?
Most of the orchids that hit my fertile abstract imagination as "ANGELS", have LOTS of orchid blosssoms when they bloom, which makes me think of God's Heavenly Hosts descending.
Sometimes, there are hundreds, on one orchid plant. Here is one little white one, kissed with sunshine yellow in its "heart" area, that looks like it is coming with a blessing. Now, I KNOW that most people have never seen an Angel, but I have seen Angel orchids. There are so many of them, with so many different funcions, I simply cannot show them all, but I put a lot of photos here - so YOU can see the Angels!
After you learn all about Angel Orchids, you might just like to invite some into YOUR home, so I have a few tips here, down farther, on how to PROPERLY care for them. Now, I'm no orchid expert, but I DO watch my husband grow them, and he IS an expert. He knows all their proper names, and everything - but, "he don't know nothin' 'bout" who they REALLY are - that's our secret!

Angels Coming From the Sky - click to enlarge.
Sung to the tune of "Angels We Have Heard on High"...
A very odd angel, indeed, but that's what she looks like!
This one is just sweet...or, IS she?
Check out her colors - and her unique bright yellow "shield"! Almost looks like a little Angel, doesn't she?
When she blooms, she is just about perpendicular to her stem, which REALLY makes her look like she is en route to Earth bringing peace and goodwill to men!
This orchid's appearance lends itself to a lot of different applications. That "shield" in the middle, sort-of looks like some demonic face, so you could surmise that this Angel Orchid has defeated evil, and has its head on her "shield" to proclaim it, or...she could fit into the "Alien Orchid" category, because she conjures up images, of that, too.
I just think she's an "Angel Orchid"! More Angel Orchids below...right after a book we love on these. Of course, the authors didn't have a clue that they were writing about Angel Orchids...that's our secret...shhh!

Naturally, they don't call them that...
Ultimate Orchid
Amazon Price: $19.77 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
List Price: $25.00
The author, Thomas J. Sheehan, calls this book Ultimate Orchid, with good reason. If you had to select just ONE orchid to grow, which one would it be? An Angel Orchid, wouldn't it? How could you ask for a more desirable houseguest? You would have companionship, comfort, protection, and heavenly input. What MORE could you possibly want?
Look at the cover - is that an Angel Orchid. or what? Gollllly...I don't understand why everyone doesn't SEE that...

The Warrior Guardian Angel Orchids
...ready to fight for thee and thine...
ANYONE can tell, these are Warrior Guardian Angel Orchids! Ever watchful, armed to the teeth, ready to descend at the slightest hint of chaos, injustice, or evil! Just take a look at their "war stance", and how they watch on all sides!
Prepared from birth, to be warriors, to protect the innocent, they LIVE for the sweet sounds of battle! Why, they are even in ranks, can't you tell?
Now, these Warrior Guardian Angel Orchids are the subtlest of the subtle, because they have - are you ready? - a SECRET WEAPON You would never guess what it is...so, I suppose I'll have to tell you! To cover their descent, and throw the enemy off their trail, the exude one of the sweetest, most pungent aroma, of any of the orchids my husband grows. How's THAT for a "battle disguise"? You would never suspect that they were capable of dispatching any foe - large or small - and I'm ABOUT ready to call them to help me get rid of the ALIEN ORCHIDS!
Keep it under wraps, okay?

Another Guardian Angel Orchid
...a gentler type...
This Guardian Angel Orchid is really swift, but its tactics are much gentler than the Warrior Guardian Angels.
As fast as he moves, an adversary never detects his arrival. When evil raises its ugly head, this Guardian Angel Orchid comes in to stop the milder types, like someone who is about to say an unkind word to a child, or thinking about kicking a dog, or contemplating taking something that doesn't belong to them. Now, if the thought has already become an action - well, THAT'S when the Warrior Guardian Angels step in. They don't put up with any of that, and have v-e-r-y effective ways of stopping it. But, this fellow, he and his cohorts - are more like "deflectors", and have averted more wicked actions, than anyone but God and the Angels know!

The Ministering Angel Orchid
...last but not least...
This fairly large, bulky Ministering Angel Orchid does exactly what it says in the title. He "ministers". Notice his wide, comfy arms - just perfect for wrapping around ones who have suffered the loss of a loved one, or been wounded in battle, or is sorry for what they have done - that can't be undone.
He moves very gradually into the picture, to wrap you in his "everlasting arms", to comfort, console, and completely enclose you in his empathetic embrace. No, you're right - he isn't elegant, spectacular, flashy, or beautiful, but most things that truly have a practical, utilitarinan purpose - aren't! Think about it...your cheek or your brow may be lovely, but try to survive - minus some of your "less lovely" components, and see how long you last!
This Ministering Angel rarely makes himself known, but we have all felt his compassion, and he has an ability that every heart specialist would love to obtain - he can "heal the broken-hearted", and THAT is worth more than all of the money, in the WORLD!
Isn't this Print Beautiful?
The Proper Care of an Angel Orchid
...to the best of my knowlege, that is...

Wouldn't you like to know how to properly care for an Angel Orchid? Yeah, well - me, too. The TRUTH is - I don't know! Because they are usually considered "persona non grata", to most people who grow orchids. They are said to be "difficult to grow" - but, my husband doesn't have any trouble at all. Maybe it's because his wife - that's me - knows that they are really Angels, and not really orchids. No,... that's not it.
The proper way to care for an Angel Orchid, is pretty much the same as the proper way to care for an Angel. WHAT? I can hear you saying that, even though I can't hear you. What I mean, is - you treat an Angel with extreme deference - not worship - but respect. You acknowledge their presence, you make sure they have enough light - that's sunlight for Angels - you see to it that their needs for water and nourishment are met, and you pay attention to them. THAT'S how you properly care for Angel Orchids.
In the case of the Warrior Guardian Angel Orchids, it they are exposed to too much light, you "blow their cover", and they aren't able to arm themselves properly, so their edges get "burnt". With the Ministering Angel Orchid a shady tree or poorly lit area is best, to help those who need comfort, to relax. Most of the other Angel Orchids, like the Angel of Mercy Orchids, the regular rank and file Guardian Angels Orchids, and the Sweet Angel Orchids, will thrive with just a regular dose of sunshine, food and water.
Once in a long while, my husband has to "clip their wings" - whoa! - wait a minute...not like it sounds! There is a proper way to do it, and it is NOT what you thought it was. To keep the Angel Orchids at optimum effectiveness - looks, development, and ability to perform their various tasks, you have to "clip their wings". On Angel Orchids, that is accomplished by tendering removing them from their orchid pot, and gently pruning back their roots. If they are the type that is mounted on bark, or a stone, or cork - their roots can be trimmed, in place. See the Warrior Guardian Angel Orchid section above, and you'll see how easy that is. Because they HAVE to be prepared to swing into battle at a moment's notice, they are usually mounted on bark. That way, when they need to descend, their roots are unhampered by an orchid pot - gives them "freedom of movement, you know?
One more thing - Angel Orchids do not eat food - I KNOW, the angels in the Bible ate, but they weren't Angel Orchids. Those pictured above only need air, light, and water, to survive and thrive. Occasionally, a mild offering of liquid vitamins and minerals - specifically made for them - is appreciated, and sometimes they need help with mold issues. Then, my husband uses some special "secret Angel Orchid solution", and sprays them lightly with it. HE doesn't call it that, of course, but that's what it is!
He calls it Orchid Fertilizer, but THAT'S RIDICULOUS! Everyone knows that Angel Orchids aren't fertile! They don't have baby Angel Orchids, so why would he call it Orchid Fertilizer? Oh...that's right - I forgot! HE doesn't know they are "Angel Orchids"!
So, caring for Angel Orchids? That's all it takes; well - that, and love, attention, and a little appreciation - just like you and I.

- I love orchids and prefer them to other flowers to decorate my house. I bring in a whole plant and it lasts long so even if I buy them, they are still cheaper than buying flowers every other day or two.
