It is a gtreat deal for everyone. Doesn't matter what you make and you don't have to have a sob story. It is not a charity. I am surprised everytime some one calls for info that they feel they need to justify using it. Seriously! you never have to justify a great deal!

I went to the website, looks like it is down for now? I heard about this from my daughter to help save with the high cost of food in our area. Does anyone know what happened to the website, or why it is down for now?

I am a director for Angel Food Ministries in Colorado. I absolutley love it. I have been buying it for almost a year and my family has been very happy with the quality of the food and the diversity of the menu. The best part about Angel Food for me has nothing to do with the food, however. It's seeing the people who are being served by this ministry - and I don't mean only the families who purchase food. The volunteers who help make Angel Food a reality are just as blessed. Knowing that we are making a difference for good and for God is very rewarding. I am humbled by the support of our dedicated volunteers. I'm so thankful for the difference Angel Food Ministries has made!

    Hi Bev,

    I agree with you entirely!

I was talking today with a man handling 30 families a month through Angel Food in South Carolina.

    Here's his quote to me:

"The quantity and quality of the foods is top rate, the organizational efforts extraordinary, and the known good to literally thousands of people who do need help cannot be measured. "

I added that when disaster strikes, AFM works through their local affiliates! That's why my church is considering taking this on this year.

    Thanks for your input.

I know MANY seniors who say they wouldn't be getting meat in such great quality and quantity if it weren't for Angel Food Specials.
  • Bev Dec 17, 2008 @ 2:26 pm | delete
Possibly Julie's expectations were over the top. I am a director for an Angel Food site and I have personally used the food numerous times. I have eaten in some of the best restaurants worldwide, and still can't find fault with the quality of what is presented. We service about 100 clients a month. I have in 19 months had no one bring anything back or complain about the general quality of the food. In reality it is impossible to always get perfect meat or to like everything that is furnished in the monthly box. I had one person say their steaks were tough and I contacted Angel Food and they were replaced on the next shipment. They stand behind all their food. A lot of our customers haven't been able to have this much meat available to them each month for a long time and are so very appreciative and pleased. Please give Angel Food a try.

I've posted your comment, but I've honestly not had had your experience with that quality problem. I and most of the people I'm familiar with have not had those problems. And likewise, many do NOT feel they are able to buy more for the same amount of money on a routine basis.

I tried AFN in October and was very disappointed. The food was of a low quality and most of the meat I had to throw away because of all of the preservatives. I am not a picky eater and if I get something that's of a lower quality I can usually use spices or cooking techniques to get it to be palatable. But nothing could save some of the items I received. Everyone can really do better by combining coupons with sales at your local grocery store. You will get a higher quality of food for the same amount of money.

I think the mission of AFN is a great one. But pull their 990 and you'll see that while they are a charity, the Wingo family receives over $2 million a year in salaries. The couple who started Angel Food Network receives a million each year between the two of them. That to me is passing off poor food to poor people and getting rich off of it. Go to http://www.guidestar.org and pull their tax return. It's a matter of public record.

I actually like to get food from the Angel Food Ministries...my mom complains when I do because of the variety of things we don't normally buy, but that is just one of the reasons that I enjoy it, other than the savings.

Can you find out why the Hillbilly housewife website hasn't posted the menus & grocerylist for Nov/Dec's angelfood box?
  • Steven Paul Nov 22, 2008 @ 2:33 pm | delete
Yes this is a nice alternative to grocery store prices, but often the trucks do run late like today to our host site in Houston. Not really a major problem but when you have to take off of work to pick up the food and add in the time lost on the time clock, well we actually lost money today! And if we are running late and miss our "pick-up" time we lose our food. So perhaps we need to change our host site fron Heights Church to another location.

Please go to www.angelfoodministries.com and click on 'site location'. Type in your zip code and presto, ... a site near you will appear ... God Bless and hope you love 'Blessing by the Box." Art B

I just heard about this today. My daughter said they were talking about how great it was at work today. We checked it out and found a sight withing 10 miles of us, probably only 4 or 5.miles. We checked the menus (on separate computers in different rooms.) Tomorrow, we will discuss what and how much to order. She has 2 children so we are a family of 4. This should be perfect. The menu looks great. This will cut down on the trips to Walmart where we always come out with more than groceries. Should save us lots of money! And it sounds like the quality will be very good.

Hi Helen. Yes that problem is annoying. Having gotten products from Angel Food Ministries many many months, I've never seen the problem you describe. My sense is that if you would actually call the host site and then contact AngelFoodMinistries.com they would attempt to resolve the issue to everyone's satisfaction.

When dealing with trucks, you'll always have some delays though.
  • Helen Aug 24, 2008 @ 10:02 am | delete
I am very dissappointed in the quality of the deliveries of the food. 1st, a time has been set for the driver to be there, but he doesn't show up until 4 hours later, the boxes are scattered all over the truck because there were no restraints to hold the boxes in place as he went down the road. Items were carried in individually is some cases. Everything that should have been on the list was not there because the driver allowed the prior stop-off to take too much product for themselves so that left a shortage at the final destination. I observed elderly people outside in the heat because there was no where for them to sit inside the airconditioned building, some left and came back when they were told the truck would be there in an hour and a half, but it wasn't , so with the price of gasoline, they stayed this time. These elderly people paid for the products listed on the sheet of paper, so when it wasn't there and no refunds offered, some were left without until next month! Bargain??

This was my first month using Angel Food and I have to thank EVERYONE involved!! Im a single working parent and have a tough time making ends meet but with the amount of money that I saved in my food bill I will be using Angel Food EVERY month. The food quality is GREAT and the people that were there to help were awesome!! Everyone had a smile and they even helped me out to my car with the food. This is a Excellent service and recommend it to ANYONE without ANY hesitation.
    Thank You!!!

I had read about (and researched) the Angel Food Ministry program a few years ago but was unable to find one close to where I lived. In March a local church made the Ministry one of their community projects. It has been a Godsend for my family. My husband and I are retired and raising our grandchildren. This has helped us tremendously no only with the foods we have recieved but by enabling us to redirect the money we save to necessary items for the children. I have told everyone who will listen about the goodness of this program and have only high praise to say about it.

Angel Food Ministries has really helped my family. I found out about it through Eagle Mountain International Church. I sent info about it to a friend living in my apartment building and he was able to work with a nearby church to offer it to all the people in the building. That was about 3 years ago. The food I receive from them is high quality and it comes at about the time of the month that I'm needing it. It has been a true blessing in my life and those in my building. I am even now able to buy extra and give to those here that need it but couldn't afford it and that's an even greater blessing.

Steve, Giving this idea to a politician is a sure way to ruin it. Why don't you give the idea to some entrepreneurial pastors of large churches. They may know just the person. Then only contact an MP if you need a politician to keep other hamfisted, money grubbing bureaucrats from fouling things up.

I have been an Angel Food volunteer for nearly two years and we have all 'classes' of people taking advantage of the great savings. Some of our most faithful participants buy for their college kids, their neighbor out of a job, someone who has lost a family member, and so on. We may have a lot of people with low income, but they are all 'high-class' with us. This program is a real blessing.

Thanks for your valuable service. It is very useful to average American family. Now day's food prices are going to rise. Now I can able to save about $25 every month on Groceries. One important news to all, that the Burger King Franchise plans to increase their Franchise network. We know its one of the baggiest and have 11, 200 networked Franchises. Interested persons can apply. Once again your are providing good services for lower class people.

Thanks for introducing me to Angel Food Ministries. I had no idea, but I'm looking forward to shaving a little money off of the grocery bill.

As a minister of outreach for Angel Food Ministries, I supervise 15-20 trucks a month, over 20,000 orders going to three states. Over 6 years, the stories of who we have helped are heart-wrenching. But, there are still many who need it and don't know. THANKS!

A great way of exending a helping hand out (not down) to the working poor. Great ministry -- thanks for bringing it to the world's attention, Chuck.

Hay James! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Sorry we don't get Angel Food Ministries to Korea yet!

This is an excellent project and an excellent lens. I know first hand what it is like to go without food so it's something I really appreciate. Thank you.

Angel Food Ministries is in my mind an excellent corollary to the attempt to help a struggling economy become self sufficient.

It reduces the cost of food but helps people retain their dignity while harnessing community volunteers and building local/regional "social capital".

Great idea, hats off to all the volunteers involved in this and to Chuck H for putting the word out.

Thanks John and the rest of you who have left comments. I just want to be sure everyone knows... Angel Food Ministries is for anyone who wants to save money whether they are in "financial need" or not!

A few years ago, when finances were really tight, Mom and I were very happy when Angel Food Ministries came into our community. The food is good and the price is right. Now, we're doing okay and hope someone else is taking advantage of this opportunity. Good for you, Chuck. Great idea. JD

It's clever that you're using squidoo to get the word out about this cool initiative.

I am the person Chuck referred to above. He has asked me to leave a comment. My parents are in their 70's and on a fixed income. They couldn't afford to eat as well as they do without being able to order food through Angel Food Ministries every month.
  • Valeria Sep 20, 2007 @ 9:27 am | delete
This is a great idea because it is available to everyone, regardless of income level. There aren't many programs that are valuable in this way since most of them have set income guidelines.
