Reducing Anger Can Increase Your Quality of Life
Anger's Only Function Is To Stop Stress
Constant anger takes a physical toll on users
Actor/director Mel Gibson gets caught on audio tape in hot anger , caused by his much younger girlfriend, saying some harsh words to her I am sure he regrets. An angry man is a stupid man.Look at actor Alec Baldwin not too long ago when he let himself be audio taped yelling at his daughter. He said some severe words to her that he probably regrets and that she will never forget.
Moreover, these tirades are splashed across the TV and in newspapers and their actions remain long after the event.
We all get angry and say some words that may feel good at the time or may even be justified, but in the calm light of cooler times we wish we had not said them. So how are we to handle these times when we recognized we are getting angry? What causes the extreme anger ?
First, anger is not always bad. It can be used as a survival mechanism by someone who is being attacked by a mugger, for example. First may come fear, then, anger. This is followed by offensive measures as you defend and even attack the mugger
In addition, controlled anger is a better choice. This is an example where your boss is making unreasonable demands on you to work overtime without pay. I think many of us can relate to that. "If you're not getting your work done in 8 hours, then you must not be working efficiently." Controlled anger allows you to stand up for yourself in an assertive manner, but not out of control.
Anger's only function is to stop stress. It does this by taking painful physical or emotional arousal and blocking or discharging it.
But anger is only effective in the short term and can actually harm the person who constantly uses anger to reduce stress. Various studies show that all your organs, heart, liver, stomach, arteries are all adversely affected by constant anger. It can cause hypertension, stroke, heart attack, gastritis, ulcers and clogged arteries.

Top 8 Strategies For Reducing Anger
Don't let anger be your first response to a stressor
Constant anger can ruin your health. Studies show that all your organs are adversely affected by anger. This can cause hypertension, ulcers and cardiovascular diseases. This is just the physical toll. From an interpersonal relationship stance, it can ruin any relationships with friends. Few people want to be around someone whose first response to any stressful situation is anger.
If you are a person who first response is nearly always anger to any stressful or unpleasant situation, how do you change this habit? According to research, anger as a first response is a habit that you can change.
For example, instead of beating and kicking the soda machine when it takes your money but does not give you a soda, instead find who manages the machine and notify them of the problem, or if you there is no one about, perhaps you could write a letter to the vendor and tell them of the problem. There are yearly instances where a soda machine tipped over while an angry person was shaking it and it killed them.
What steps can you take to stop anger as a first response? Listed below are the top 8. ways to reduce stress, not listed in any order of importance:
1. Exercising. Using such methods as walking, jogging, sports, swimming - any aerobic activity can reduce stress.
2. Working intensely. This is the time to take care of chores around the house like washing dishes, vacuuming, cleaning, making the beds, whatever you can do to improve the look of your home will reduce stress by focusing your energy into a task.
3. Using humor. This is one that can be used during a quick, unexpected stressor such as someone cutting you off while driving. Instead of speeding up and tailgating them or telling them they are number one with a hand gesture, just look at it humorously. I like to use my Elvis voice and say, "Thank you, thank you very much," when cut off.
(I'm not saying it will be easy. It takes time to change a life-long behavior. But you have to realize that in almost every instance, anger is not the appropriate response. If you mess up and get angry, get back on the wagon and continue to use stress reducing strategies.)
4. Relaxation exercises such as meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, and self-hypnosis can be used to lower your anger.
5. Music. Listening to some of your favorite tunes can help reduce stress and keep you calm. (I don't recommend listening to music that degrades women or those in authority or advocates taking someone's life, as some of the more popular genres of music are prone to do.)
6. Resting. A Brief rest, taking a few deep breaths, sitting on the beach or at a park, can all be calming.
7. Verbalizing pain. Just the act of saying the problem out loud can reduce your stress, even yelling it in your car (windows up) can have a calming effect. Venting should be done in private and it is not something to be used as a primary stress reliever. You're better off verbalizing the pain and then developing a solution.
8. Pounding on something you won't damage like a heavy punching bag or a pillow can relieve stress.

When Anger Goes Beyond A Short Temper
Uncontrollable rage may indicate an anger disorder known as Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED)
When you first start driving a commercial tractor-trailer, I mean as a new grad from a truck driving school, a truck driving company will pair you with a driver-trainer. This is an old hand who will help to refine your skills you started learning in your course. You go out for a month with the trainer, usually on a trip across the country and back. For the most part, the guy I went out with was a nice guy. I learned a lot from him. When I took a loaded tractor-trailer safely across Grapevine Hill in California, he said, "You've crossed the Grapevine. Now you're a trucker."
But I noticed along the way that he had a hair-trigger temper. I was amazed that he was driving a truck and had not been fired for fighting. There were a couple of times that if I had not intervened he would have tangled with some other drivers over what seemed to me minor frustrations. I was glad when my association with him was just about over with when I saw him take the receiver from a wall phone on which he was talking to his wife and beat it against the wall until the receiver broke in two, with the top half flying across the room.
I didn't realize it then but his anger may have gone beyond merely a short temper to an IED, an intermittent explosive disorder. People with an IED need mental health counseling, a book isn't going to solve their problem. They may even need medication to help solve defective brain chemistry. But this is something that can be determined by psychological counseling.
There are three characteristics that generally indicate a person may have IED. The first is that there is some serious property damage after the incident, or even bodily harm. The second is that the reaction to the stimulus is way out of proportion and completely unexpected. The third characteristic is that there no evidence of the use of mind altering drugs or medication, and no existing mood disorder such as bipolar or depression.
Furthermore, the angered person is fatigued and confused. They may feel guilty and distressed over what they have done. If you know someone like this, urge them to seek professional help.

- Thanks. As a pre-teen I was often very angry, sometimes over the smallest things. But as I got older I became more mellow and let most irritations wash off me without effect. Thanks for the comment.
