Another 9 1/2 Weeks

Played to surly, snarly imperfection, Mickey Rourke's character (John) in 9-1/2 Weeks helped raise the bar on how much to reveal in mainstream soft porn. Whether erotic tension was raised by his relationship with Elizabeth (Kim Basinger) is another matter, and may well reflect whether one is aroused by the idea of abusive sex with--well, someone like Mickey Rourke.

Regardless, Another 9-1/2 Weeks was released direct to video, so perhaps this tells us something about the confidence of loosing a sequel into an unsuspecting theater market. Of course, the central question raised by the sequel is: Whatever happened to John? After all, when Kim Basinger won an Oscar in L.A. Confidential, we lost any chance of seeing what happened to Elizabeth. Well, true to his burly macho sensitivity, John's been yearning for the glory days, when he could take a casual stroll from his Wall Street job and pick up someone like Elizabeth for three months of increasingly scumbag treatment. We can practically hear him thinking, "Where are those closet-sub, art gallery dealers when you really need them?"

Try Paris. That's the home of Lea (Angie Everhart), Elizabeth's best friend. Aha--will she be John's new obsession, or the catalyst for a deeper, more profound change in his character? See if you can tell from his thoughtful, yet fashionably brooding expression as he gazes toward the Seine at the end. --Stephan Magcosta

Cryptkeeper's Deadly Duo Pack (Tales From The Crypt - Bordello Of Blood & Demon Knight)

This disk collects the two Tales From the Crypt movies on one side of a single disk. In the first movie, Billy Zane is excellent as a demon looking for a final key so that the demons can retake the universe. This is the story of his battle with the current Demon Knight, the protector of the key. Wonderfully crafted and dark. The second movie, Bordello of Blood, is a more tongue-in-cheek T&A-fest and lacks the dark seriousness of the first. Lilith, the queen of all vampires, has been awakened. She can be controlled by a key (the one from the first movie). She has set up a bordello to lure victims to her hunger. Dennis Miller is his wise-cracking self as he portrays a down-and-out private investigator looking for a missing person.
It is nice not to have to flip the disk over or insert a new disk but there is no room for real extras (we do get the original trailers). Seeing the two films together really showcases the extreme difference between the two. The first is dark, well-written and well-acted. The second is gratuitous, crass and just not quite as good (although it is fun in its own way). Now they are together at a reasonable price. - Joshua Koppel (Chicago, IL United States)

First to Die

James Patterson's novels are full of twists and turns, and his 1ST TO DIE is no exception. In translating this novel to the screen (Which by the way WAS a miniseries on NBC), the storyline is basically the same, with some changes for dramatic effect particularly in the denouement.

However, in bringing "The Women's Murder Club" to life, director Russell Mulcahy puts together a good cast: Tracy Pollan as the police detective with a rare blood disease; Carly Pope as the cub reporter out to make the big story; Pam Grier as the feisty and loyal medical examiner; and Megan Gallagher as the district attorney (although Gallagher is given little to do in the screen version). Gil Bellows as Pollan's love interest does well, as does Robert Patrick as egotistical novelist Nicholas Jenks. Angie Everhart fills out the cast as Jenks' submissive and obedient wife.

The plot revolves around a serial killer who is killing newlyweds, and the detective and friends frantically tries to piece together the clues to come up with the culprit. There are a couple of surprises near the end, but they are not the same as in the book, so if you've read the book, be prepared. I think sometimes they change the murderer because they don't want the people who've read the book to know from the start who the killer is.
