Who are the Anglo-Indians?

Anglo-Indians are the mixed race, which originated in India during the British Raj, or the Colonial period in India. The British went to India as Traders in 1600 and left India after ruling it for over 400 years, in 1947. British soldiers married or had affairs with Indian women and their offspring were called Eurasians or Anglo-Indians.

I have called Anglo-Indians the Secret Race, as not many of them are found today In India. Thousands of Anglo-Indians have immigrated to countries like Canada,England, Spain and the United States of America.

Anglo-Indians can be easily spotted as the "Asians who have English names and who speak perfect English, without a strong Indian accent".All Anglo-Indians are Christians, but all Christians are not Anglo-Indians.

A few popular Anglo-Indians are Alistair McGowan,George Orwell,Rudyard Kipling,Norman Hutchinson, Peter Sarsted,Cliff Richard and Englebert Humperdinck.

Melvyn Brown, in Calcutta ,is known as the Chronicler of the Anglo-Indians community worldwide, having self published a large number of books and newsletters on the Anglo-indian race, which is slowly vanishing into the annals of history.

What is the definition of an Anglo-Indian?

The Male Ancestor is British or European!

An Anglo-Indian is defined as "a person who is of mixed British/European and Indian descent, and whose Grandfather on the male side is British/European".

Anglo-Indians are the only minority community, whose native language is English, who are Christian by faith and who are an urban community in India, with their own Heritage,Culture with a western background.

I completed my BA Degree in KGF then my B Ed Degree in Bangalore where I've lived for the last 30 years. I worked as a teacher for 2 years then joined Canara Bank where I served for 23 years before taking Voluntary Retirement a few years ago. I now write Recipe books and work as a consultant on food related matters. The books I've published so far is listed below: 1. The Best of Anglo-Indian Cuisine - A Legacy 2. A Collection of Anglo-Indian Roasts, Casseroles and Bakes 3. Flavours of the Past (Classic Colonial Cuisine) 4. Anglo-Indian Delicacies 5. The Anglo-Indian Festive Hamper. The recipes reflect the true taste of Anglo-Indian Cuisine that were prepared by the older generation and are now almost forgotten.
