What is angular stomatitis ?
Angular stomatitis is the splitting or the cracking of the corners of the mouth as a result of a bacterial or a fungal infection. It is also known as perleche, cheilosis and angular cheilitis.
It causes painful cuts in the sides of the lips that ache whenever the mouth is opened.
In severe cases, these cuts can even bleed and a crust may form over them. Angular stomatitis can also cause an unsightly swelling that can spread in the sides of the mouth.

What causes angular stomatitis ?
Angular stomatitis can be caused either by a bacteria or by the fungus candida albicans. In most cases, the infections happens as a result of any condition that causes saliva to build up in the mouth corners (labial commissures) to create a moisturized environment where bacteria and fungi can live. One of these conditions is the constant licking of the lips or the drooling during sleep.
Also, the use of dentures that don't fit properly is one of the causes of angular stomatitis. The reason is that, when dentures are ill-fitting, they can cause the over closure of the mouth. As a result, little folds form in the sides of the lips and saliva starts to accumulate in them to ceate a moisturized environment that favors the infection.
They are other less common causes of angular stomatitis like contact dermatitis or allergies to toothpastes, lipsticks and other conditions.
The other factor that increases the likelihood of having angular cheilitis (the other name of angular stomatitis) is the lack of iron and vitamin B2, B3, B6 and B12.
