Learn About Finding Grants for Your Animal Rescue or Shelter
Animal shelters are in constant need of funding and support. Grant Gopher is here to help you find grants for your animal shelter, rescue or welfare organization.
Where To Start??
The best place to start your animal shelter grant research is with an available grant database. The best ones will track the deadlines for you. After all, what good does it do you to find a great program AFTER the application deadline?
You can also find animal shelter grants by conducting internet searches. Of course, this leaves you at the mercy of what the search engine thinks are the best matches for you, and often results in outdated links, information that isn't relevant to you, and just plain takes a lot of time. And you've got animals depending on you for some tender loving care! Who has time to search for hours upon hours?

- Bernice Barbour Foundation
- The Bernice Barbour Foundation supports the preservation and care of animals and the prevention of cruelty to animals. The foundation supports nonprofit organizations whose purpose is to benefit animals. Their next application deadline is July 31, 2010.
- Build A Bear Workshop
- Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. is accepting grant applications from domestic pet programs across the United States and Canada.
Bearemy's Kennel Pals® grants to support domestic pets are awarded four times a year. The Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation desires to provide direct support for animals in domestic pet programs including animal welfare organizations, pet rescue and rehabilitation organizations, and therapeutic and humane education pet programs. Their next application deadline is December 31, 2009. - Edith J. Goode Residuary Trust
- The Edith J. Goode Residuary Trust supports the development of organizational capacity for organizations incorporated for the prevention of cruelty to animals. In particular, the trust supports shelter management and other training costs for shelter personnel. The maximum grant is about $5,000.
Applications are accepted year round and reviewed quarterly. - Maddie's Fund
- Guided by its mission to revolutionize the status and well-being of companion animals, Maddie's Fund is devoting its resources to help make the United States a "no-kill nation." To that end, Maddie's Fund seeks to support local coalitions that combine the talents and resources of adoption guarantee organizations, animal-control agencies, and traditional shelters to end the killing of healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats in their communities within ten years.
They have several different grant programs and applications can be submitted year-round.
Grant Writing Tips for Animal Shelters
Tip #1Give your project or program a catchy name, that also describes the project. This will make your program stand out from the others.
Tip #2
Don't use wimpy verbs! Avoid conditional verbs like "might", "should", and "if". State your case and use declarative verbs like "will"!
Tip #3
How do you know if a grant may be a good match for your organization?
Consider the six items below for the program or proposal you want to fund. Assign a value of 1 to 5 for each item, 5 being the highest score. If any one of the items is a 3 or less, then the grant may not be a good match for your program.
* Matches Goals of Grant Provider
* Matches Required Demographic
* Able to be Completed in Required Timeframe
* Sustainable After Allowable Grant Period
* Necessary Funds are Available
* Evaluation Methods are Compatible
Tip #4
Winning proposals give something back. Some projects develop a product. The process you go through can become a product. Funders want others to adopt and adapt what you've learned. Dissemination of information or knowledge to others may give your proposal the winning edge.
Tip #5
Keep your writing style clear and simple. Look at your pages when you are done writing the proposal. If a page seems like one big block of writing, look for ways to break up the page. Keep a good rhythm of long and short sentences; be sure your writing flows.

- I am an individual animal rescuer. I've been operating as a non-profit for several years.. taking in very little in donations & operating 95 - 100% out of pocket. Would like to get my 501c3, but need to find a grant/grants that will allow me to do so. as I can't afford it on my own, having lost my job some time ago. I've noticed that nearly all the grants are for already established 501c3's. Any ideas on where I can locate a grant or grants that will help me start my non-profit? Thank you!
