From the lens Finding Grants for Animal Shelters.

I am an individual animal rescuer. I've been operating as a non-profit for several years.. taking in very little in donations & operating 95 - 100% out of pocket. Would like to get my 501c3, but need to find a grant/grants that will allow me to do so. as I can't afford it on my own, having lost my job some time ago. I've noticed that nearly all the grants are for already established 501c3's. Any ideas on where I can locate a grant or grants that will help me start my non-profit? Thank you!

I am looking for grants specifically for BUILDING an animal shelter. Is there something like that out there?

I am looking for the same thing! Have you found anything like that? I am just starting out. I am looking to build in the next year (hopefully).

I feel like charities for animals don't get as much attention as those for people. Great lens btw!

Thanks for this lens. I am interested in learning how to write grant proposals, and this is for a worthy cause!

Looking for suggestions on how to get money or doantions for a non-profit bird rehab in a big city. They take in injured birds and care for them and release them.

The Banfield Charitable Trust provides grants to non-profit organizations for pet related programs. Check out the guidelines and application at www.banfieldcharitabletrust.org.

Thanks for all the useful information. I've written a number of grants for an animal shelter and it's tough going out there right now! Maddie's Fund is nice but very restrictive I've found. Good luck on your grant writing!

You are so welcome! It does seem very difficult to find funding for animal-related causes right now. In our recent experience, funders seem to really like animal programs that have a human component, such as a therapy pet program for senior citizens. Best wishes for your success!!

Funding for animal welfare/rescue is very competitive, so if you want to start your own nonprofit, be prepared to fund a lot of it out of your own pocket. Ideally, you should partner up with an already existing animal welfare organization in your area. Maybe there is one that needs a facility and you can work with them to provide that facility at your farm.

My family owns a 55 acre horse farm, outside the Winston-Salem NC area, we are thinking about turning the farm into an animal rescue facility, any ideas/suggestions as to what organizations we should be speaking to?

Hubby and I are planning to start a Dachshund rescue soon. This website is great for looking up grants and wonderful tips for writing grants. Once we move and get everything in order I'll be back at this site for sure!

Thank you for visiting! We are still trying to get the hang of putting together a really great lens so there should be some updates soon!

I work at a wildlife rehab center (Blue Mountain Wildlife) and we're always looking for a grant to fit our needs. I am grateful for your tips on writing grants and will check out your "grant gopher"! Keep up the good work! We just did a Squidoo lense ourselves... http://www.squidoo.com/bluemountainwildlife . Our first lense, but there will be more about the animal soon.
