Looking for Animal Tracks!
Winter is a wonderful time to find out which animals are wandering around your neighborhood. When a fine dusting of snow covers the earth, tracks are easy to spot. Go out for a walk before the sun has had a chance to blur the tracks. The clean lines in the fresh snow will make it easy to identify the animals that have trod there.
Look for tracks near the bird feeder. Not all of the tracks may be made by birds. Are there mouse or squirrel tracks as well?
How about larger tracks? Do you see cat tracks going over the car, dog tracks near the doghouse or raccoon tracks near the garbage?
When I go out to look for animal tracks I always like to take along a good field guide such as the ones mentioned below. Having pictures can help to determine the difference between two animals with similar tracks.
You also might consider talking a digital camera with you on your jonts to capture images of the animal tracks that you find in order to share your adventures with family and friends.

Just after a light snowfall is a great time to go out looking for animal tracks. The animal tracks are distinct in the fresh snow before the sun and wind have had time to distort them. Careful observation will tell you which animals walked there, which direction they were walking and sometimes what they were doing.

- Long ago I had more animal tracks than you can imagine. Today I live in a small apartment and the ants leave no tracks. Is the pidgin poop on my balcony counted?
