Animal Experiments - The Truth Revealed

Millions of animals are killed in harmful experiments every year

Animal testing / animal experimentation is the use of non-human animals in scientific experimentation. The animal used in the experiments will depend on the country that is carrying out the testings but mice and rats tend to be the most frequently used.

If the animals are not killed during the experiments, almost all of them will be killed at the end of testing.

Please join in with the fight to stop Animal Experiments, once and for all.

The Law

TorturingLatest News and Events: '...all scientific uses of animals will now be legally controlled and all Member States will have a basic system of licensing research establishments and projects. Very importantly, there is a requirement to implement the 3Rs of replacement, reduction and refinement and each project will have to undergo a harm-benefit assessment to assess whether the use of animals is necessary and justified. Animal Experiments

The facts and figures

Please note: These figures are estimates. The true figures could be even higher or, of course, lower than stated here.

Figures
- In America (circa. 1994) academic researchers used between 17 and 22 million animals a year.
- In Britain scientists used between 3 and 4 million animals a year.
- Altogether, around the world, the total is probably in the region of 250 million.

Facts
- Laboratories obtain the animals they use for testing from suppliers who receive them from animal breeders, zoos, retired from activities such as racing and from the wild (Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.) Also at risk are pets picked up from the streets so do keep an eye on your pet furries!

The cash needed for testing comes from the Government, industry and charitable organisations. These can include the collecting tins seen on the streets!

The frightening fact?
We are paying for these experiments through our taxes, by giving money to a big medical charity and when we buy products from a company that uses animal experiments to test their products.

Typical Tests carried out on Animals

Drugs, tests, experiments and effects

Botulinus Toxin - The test used is the LD50 poisoning test. This test was banned by the Government in 1999 because of the unreliability and the terrible suffering it caused to animals. The test LD50 involves testing a group of animals with varying doses to determine a dose that will kill half the animals. At the end of the testing, all animals will be killed. The effects of Botulinus Toxin is freezing of the muscles, which will in turn cause loss of vision, seizures and suffocation by failure of the diaphragm.

Transplantation of genetically-engineered pig organs - These organs are transplanted into monkeys and baboons. One quarter of the primates died as a result of the surgery. The remaining animals were injected repeatedly with poisonous immune-suppressing drugs. Many suffered terribly as a result and were left to collapse and die.

Tests on monkeys for Brain Disease - Monkeys skulls are cut open and their brains are damaged by injecting chemicals or parts of the brain are sucked out.

Cancer treatment drugs are tested on mice - Some drugs do not work on mice and some do. These results prove that cancer treatments for humans tested on mice are unreliable and unnecessary.

Domestic kittens blinded by researchers - They are then injected with horseradish peroxidase (into their brains) and killed.

39 monkeys forced to run on a cylindrical treadmill - If they stopped running or didn't run for long enough, they were electrocuted.

Animals DO suffer in experiments!

According to Uncaged, millions of animals are killed in harmful experiments in the UK, every year.

Those who carry out these experiments and testings say that the animals don't really suffer at all. These experiments, apparently, are strictly regulated and those who carry out these testings believe that there is no other way to wipe out human disease or test household products for human use.

Serge Voronoff

Pioneer of the 'monkey gland' experiment

Serge Voronoff was born c. July 10, 1866 and died, September 3rd, 1951.

Working as a French Surgeon, he came up with the idea that testicular tissue extracted from monkeys could be then transplanted onto the testicles of young men which, in turn, would increase their virility as well as countering senility. At the start of his experiments, his work attracted a lot of interest and money, but very soon his work started to fall from favour and he became the subject of ridicule.

It was thought that, as a result of the transplants he performed, the HIV virus successfully migrated from monkeys to man although this has never been proved. Also, his experiments failed to lead to the results he had so often claimed.

He died in 1951 following complications due to a fall.

You can read more about Serge Voronoff here.

Typical Animal Species used for Experiments

and for what purpose

Monkeys, farm animals, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice.

Rats and mice are cheap to house, feed and obtain so are used more frequently than other species.

Animals are used for testing:
cosmetics,
household products,
skin/body lotions,
medicines for people and animals,
pesticides,
food additives,
hair dye,
drugs,
organ transplantation,
vitamins.

Reasons for Animal Testing:
To test them using the LD-50 test, which is used to measure the acute toxicity level of certain ingredients,
To test for eye and skin irritancy,
To test for adverse reactions following administration of products which include skin allergies,
To test adverse effects from drugs and vitamins,
To test for results of cancer treatments,
To test for possible cures and treatments for diseases.

I try to buy as many products as possible that aren't tested on animals (if only medicine wasn't tested!), it's terrible that this is allowed!

I wonder if anyone will race for the cure if they named it something like. Raise money to kill more animals in cruel experiments. It's unfortunate that this has been such a one sided conversation. The real truth is: for a pharmaceutical company to patent a drug that saves live, the FDA and similar regulatory agencies all around the world require pharmaceutical companies to prove that their drugs are safe and efficacious via nonclinical (animal), and clinical (human) studies. To gain toxicological data animals are euthanized at the end of studies and the tissues are collected and examined by histopathologists. You want to make sure that the drugs you are taking don't cause your kidneys to shut down right, well they have to examine the kidneys to make sure that this doesn't happen. To make sure that smallest amount of higher order species are used (monkeys, dogs etc.) they use mice. Not just because it is cheaper, but because it is unethical to waste thousands of monkeys on a drug that may not be safe or effective. So you use mice. It sounds brutal, but have you ever seen someone die of a horrific disease? Do you know someone who has died of breast cancer? It should be nice if some of those animal murders would come up with something that would save the life of my mom, or sister, or wife. I might even run a 5k and try to raise some money to help them do it. Every one should do themselves a favor and ask themselves what they would be willing to do without if they were to get rid of biomedical research. Every one should do this world a favor and ignore everything that PETA says. Great Lens though.

Many top professors have spoken out against it.

LD testing: Clearly this is a very cruel test. Gerhard Zbinden, one of the world's best known toxicologists, has called it "a ritual mass execution of animals". It gives no information on treating human poisoning. It is an unreliable way of predicting risk to humans because the results are altered by so many factors

There is no legal requirement for animal testing.
Thank you for your lens, keep up the good work.
