Wildlife art by award winning artist Kathie Miller

From the big cats to the house cat. From the family parrot to the majestic eagle. I use various mediums, acrylic airbrush, colored pencils and even textiles. As well as wildlife, I also have graphics based on ancient rock art, pictoglyphs and pictographs some as old as 10,000 years. Falconry art and graphics and bird of prey portraits.

I have been an artist all my life. I spent hours in my room drawing and sketching. Even though I have a degree in fine art, I feel I am self taught. I ended up teaching myself most every technique I now know. My passion are the big cats, especially the jaguar. Their power and grace is magnificent. Since I became a falconer, I stared becoming interested in doing birds of prey. Changing from fur to feathers wasn't as easy as I thought, but I really enjoy doing them now. I hope you enjoy my work.

Wildlife

Every design is on many different products. Mousepads, t-shirts, tote bags and much more.

Grant's Zebra - Colored Pencil
The plains zebra has differentiated into several subspecies, two of which are now extinct. The Grant's zebra is the most common of the plains zebra subspecies. During the rainy season in Serengeti, herds of up to 10,000 individuals may form, part of one of the last great wildlife spectacles in the world.

Young Leopard - Colored Pencil
The leopard has more than 20 subspecies. The leopard is like the jaguar in coat pattern, with dark spots or rosettes. Although the size of the rosettes varies over geographical region, leopard rosettes remain empty of markings while jaguars generally have one to four dark spots inside the open spots. Leopards are dispersed over a wider area today than that of any of the other large cat. Ranging across most of the African continent, parts of Asia Minor and the Middle East to India, Pakistan, China, Siberia, much of southeast Asia, and the islands of Java and Sri Lanka.

Cougar Night - Colored Pencil
The Cougar, or Puma, has the greatest natural distribution of any mammal in the Western Hemisphere except for man. The cougar is extremely agile and has great jumping power and may leap from the ground up to a height of 18 feet into a tree. Cougars are good swimmers but prefers not to enter the water. Sight is its most acute sense with a good sense of hearing, but is thought to have a poorly developed sense of smell. The cougar is the largest cat in the genus "felis", and is comparable in size to the leopard.

Stay Alert - Textile
Using tiny pieces of fabric as my "paint". Placing pieces no larger than 1" to pieces smaller than your little fingernail. I then go back and quilt the entire piece in small circles to catch in every piece.

Birds of Prey

Secretary Bird - Colored Pencil
The Secretary bird is a bird of prey, but unlike other raptors it has long legs, wings and tail and prefers to run their prey down rather than fly. The single species of its family, the bird gets its name from its crest of long feathers that look like the quill pens 19th century office workers used to tuck behind their ears. They consume reptiles, amphibians, tortoise, rats and other small mammals as well as young game birds.

Peregrine Falcon - Colored Pencil
Following an alarming decline to near extinction during the 1950s and 1960s, this spectacular falcon is off the endangered species list. Falconers, donating their breeding birds to the cause, have increased the number of released birds back to the wild. A favorite nesting site nowadays is a tall building or bridge in a city; these urban Peregrines subsist mainly on pigeons. Peregrine falcons are sleek, crow-sized birds of prey, famous for their speed and beauty. For hundreds of years, peregrines have been prized for the sport of falconry.

Prairie Falcon-Colored Pencil
Prairie Falcons are just as fast as Peregrine Falcons, but do not typically use the same hunting strategy, preferring to fly fast and low at a height of only a few feet. They are similar in size and can be distinguished from each other by color. The Prairie Falcon is brown and has dark patches under the wings, while the Peregrine is blue-gray and has a uniform under wing color. Prairie Falcons cruising speed is estimated at 45 mph and accelerates in the chase. They typically catch birds by pursuing them in level flight and grasping them. They inhabit hills, canyons, and mountains of arid grasslands of southwestern Canada, western United States, Baja California, and northern Mexico.

Raven - Pastel
Found across the northern hemisphere, it is the most widely distributed of all corvids. There are eight known subspecies with little variation in appearance.Ravens are between 22 to 27 inches in length, with recorded weights ranging from 1.5 to 3.6 pounds. Ravens typically live about 10 to 15 years in the wild, although lifespans of up to 40 years have been recorded. Young birds may travel in flocks, but later mate for life, with each mated pair defending a territory.Ravens are extremely intelligent, versatile and opportunistic in finding sources of nutrition, feeding on carrion, insects, grains, berries, fruit and small animals.
