The spiritual meaning of animals
It is believed that animals can be totems for us in our lives. The native americans strongly believe in the power of animals as spiritual allies. Each of us can possess the attributes of different animals. In this lens I will name some animals along with their medicine. See what animal you resonate with, whether it is on this page or not. An excellent book for researching this topic is "Animal Speak" by Ted Andrews. I have had my copy of this book for many years and refer to it often.
I am cherokee by heritage but have never embraced these ancestors of mine, though I do resonate with native american beliefs for the most part. I have learned many of the ways of a medicine woman and native american teachings in my twenties. I supported my teacher through her vision quest. I made my own drum and helped create a Grandmother Drum. I will put a picture of those drums in this lens. I also have a rattle and learned soul retrieval with rattle work.

Animals for animal lover
Animal medicine
some of my favorites that I feel attracted to

Owl is a symbol for wisdom. Owl medicine is a feminine trait and is symbolically associated with clairvoyance, astral projection, and magic. Owl sees the soul. They see beyond apprearances to the truth of the matter. They know what you do not tell them. If you have owl medicine you may have these It has great awareness of all that is around it at all times. It has predator vision, which means it sees clearly what it looks at. It has great intuition, and the courage to follow its instincts. attributes.
Giraffe reaches for the heights. Her long neck allows her to get the vegetation that others cannot reach. Giraffe is one of the most successful and widespread vegetarians of the African savannah. Invoke Giraffe medicine powers for the inspiration to reach the heights in whatever you do, and call upon her for success.
Giraffe helps us explain the expression 'to stick one's neck out.' When we take risks by going further than we ever imagined possible, we see find worlds of possibility. The giraffe's vulnerability when lowering its head to drink, is a reminder to us that if we lose sight of our greater vision and consciousness and sink into a mundane way of life, we risk losing our spiritual connection.
People who have Giraffe as power animals often know what will happen in the future. They have clairvoyant abilities. Giraffe people should be very careful when talking - be sure not to say too much to the wrong person, or in the other hand, too little. Do not let other's words have an affect on you. Giraffes legs are firmly planted on the earth, but their heads are in the sky, serving as a link between the higher and lower worlds. Their flexible necks let them see what is behind, next to and in front of them. This gives them the ability to know the future and understand the past, whilst moving with the present moment. We are taught how to increase our perceptions by viewing life from all angles. When we look up, sideways, forwards, and down, the past, present and future is made known. This symbolises balance and the capability to progress. Never become complacent and lose sight of the future, yet don't live in the future, live in the now. Life could become ever more difficult until you set your sights once more on the path ahead. Giraffe can bring clear sight and can be a powerful ally to you.
If Giraffe is your power animal, then just like giraffe you will have very strong bonds with family and friends, especially parent and children.
Giraffes need only 2-4 hours of sleep a day. When sleeping they will kneel down with their neck and head wrapped around them, resting it in the crock of their leg. Some legends suggest that the sleeping habits of the giraffe is linked to ancient Eastern cultures. They are amazingly flexibility allow them to take on positions similar to Yoga therapies, where the body is contorted (but not uncomfortably) whilst in a meditative state. Coupled with its kneeling sleep position made many believe that it was actually praying instead of sleeping! Upon awakening the giraffe stood up and its great height would invoke feelings from fear to respect. Many cultures honoured the giraffe, the Egyptians art for one, featured giraffes.
Because the distance between the head and the heart is far, the giraffes vascular system has valves so sufficient blood gets to the brain. The elastic blood vessels in the head and neck take care of changes in blood pressure due to head swings. Blood pressure fluctuations and circulatory conditions may be found in those with this medicine. If this is the case, proper care is advised. What we think and feel on a heart level needs to line up in order for giraffes gifts to benefit us.
Giraffes are very quiet, laid back, docile animals making little noise except for the odd bleat. If this is your power animal, this brings you the wisdom, and power, of silence. Words often take our focus away from silent reflection. Learning to balance speech with silence, peace and tranquillity is very important. As giraffes communicate through body language, if this is your power animal you would benefit from some type of movement classes, such as Yoga or Pilates.
Although the head of the giraffe seems dainty, it has 3 horns giving it the ability to deal a nasty blow. One of its horns is a bit obscured, hidden under the skin just above its eyes. This location is similar to that of the third eye in man and reminds us to honour our visionary abilities. A wonderful power animal to have in ones life, the giraffe is a bearer of many gifts.

Dolphin are also very sexual creatures, they have been known to mate just for the sheer joy of it! For those who carry feelings of guilt or shame about their own sexual natures, Dolphins can help them release those feelings and understand that Spirit in all it's wisdom knew what he/she was doing when sex was created! Sex can help one stay younger longer, improves physical and mental as well as emotional health, is valuable as a stress reliever as well as sharing intimacy to bond even more strongly with one's partner. Dolphins tend to touch one another frequently, and science has found that touching is such a strong means of bonding that the more often people hug and touch their loved ones, the stronger the support each member feels and the healthier every one is! Because of this Dolphin can teach us that the way to heal rifts is by being willing to be open to touching and receiving touching from those we love. Obviously the touching must be done in appropriate ways, yet who couldn't do without a daily hug or pat on the back! Because Dolphins are of the sea and air, they also carry strong intuitive and creative energy. They are highly telepathic and love to communicate in many ways and forms. They can teach us too how to communicate more fully and honestly with others, as well as how best to express who we are as creative beings. We are always creating, and even though some or perhaps many of our creations are not to our liking, Dolphin is well aware that we are indeed creating everything we are experiencing in life through our thoughts, our emotions and our actions. We are amazingly powerful beings! If there is any one thing that I have always felt Dolphins would love for us to know it is this: We CAN change our lives by paying attention to what we are communicating to ourselves and others! We are constantly sending forth messages in one form or another and some of those messages are obviously not in our best interests or the world would be a much happier place to be! Have you ever watched a pod of Dolphins at play? It's amazing, the way they frolic in the sea, calling back and forth, chirping and clicking in joy. They even LOOK like they are smiling much of the time! I believe this is how they have managed to survive, even with the pollution we have dumped into our oceans, even with the ways in which many humans have shown a tragic disregard for all forms of life. Dolphins are still able to find and communicate that note of joy and there are many who are starting to listen!
Dolphin is about new promise and hope, of allowing our innate creativity to shine forth and create a new reality for ourselves at this time.

Hummingbird is associated with romantic love, passion, joy and luck. Hummingbird darts from flower to flower in search of nectar and teaches all who honour her to let in the beauty of life, the nectar of love. This tiny bird is surprisingly tough and aggressive, often driving away larger birds. Invoke Hummingbird for indomitable energy and the ability to tap great power from within. When you see a hummingbird, ask to be granted the medicine powers of luck, joy, openness of heart and romantic love. I love hummingbirds and used to be called one by my ex boyfriend.

Tiger is the hunter of the night. She is the bringer of sexual energies if there are none. She will protect those passions to be only the most loving sensual passions.
If the tiger is your personal totem, it will symbolize new adventures, and the passion to follow these in a focused manner. As an animal totem, Tiger will walk beside the two-legged who is one of extremes in nature, feelings, and temperament. These are the individuals who run either hot or cold, full of passion or completely detached, there are very few periods of lukewarm for the Tiger Soul.
The challenge for these two-legged's is in finding the balance between extremes and understanding that the two halves are not contradictions of one another, but parts of an integrate Whole. By experiencing first one facet of life, feeling and being then the "opposite", the Tiger learns the importance of Balance.
Often times, the two legged with Tiger as an Animal Totem, will walk through the flames of hell and back several times during their lifetime. Many painful lessons will be encountered wherein he/she will expend themselves to the point of exhaustion and utter depletion, to then arise like the Phoenix out of their own ashes and begin a new cycle of growth and learning. Life for these souls is experienced whole heartedly and experiences which may discourage other less motivated individuals are frequently perceived by the Tiger individual as a challenge to be met head on and conquered.
When the two-legged with this awesome Animal Spirit comes to recognize the necessity of balance and harmony, the result is a wonderfully integrated human being. In so merging with the higher octave of Yin/Yang energy, the Tiger Soul embraces his/her inheritance of true Power and Integration.
Peacock: Those who have a Peacock as a totem can receive insight into
their past lives and their karmic connection to their current life.
The study and use of foot reflexology would also be beneficial as the feet are the foundation of the structure and very pronounced in the Peacock.
The Peacock loud and raucous call, almost like laughter, reminds us to laugh at life.
There are many other legends surrounding the Peacock some religious and others mystical. Because the Peacock represented resurrection and re-birth and thus was very scared in medieval times, the most solemn oath in the days of the Knights of the Round Table was "Taken on the Peacock". Or, in other words, the oath itself was taken with each individuals hands resting on the bird as they took their vow. In Islamic tradition and lore the Peacock was guardian of the Gates of Paradise. The Chinese equate the Peacock with divinity, rank, power and beauty and it was the symbol of the Ming Dynasty. Saint Augustine believed that the Peacock was incorruptible.
The feathers are prized amount all who are taken with the natural beauty of them. Also the feathers were and are used in healing ceremonies and magical rituals. The round "eyes" of the feathers are said to give the Peacock vision into the past present and future, and they are seen as the sacred all seeing eyes of the magical world.
I have always loved peacocks called pikake in Hawaii. My husband recently bought me peacock feathers. They are beautiful.

- Fascinating!!! I tend to be drawn to foxes, wolves and bears. I recently learned in Bev'spapers lens that my birth totem is the Raven totem. That had a rather chilling effect. My son and daughter's favorite bird is a Raven and always has been.

- Love this lens, love animals and am really fascinated with animal totems and animal medicine. I am attracted to dogs and wolves, and birds especially owls and herons. But I really like most animals. We can learn so much from them and I believe we can communicate with them telapathically.

- I have had my spirit guide picture done twice (several years apart) and it is wonderful to see what guides I have and how they change over the years. There is always an owl drawn over my 3rd eye and this last picture also had dolphins...I guess we like a lot of the same animals. (:
I really enjoyed this lens! *****
