Thanks for such beautiful pictures. I am ashamed that when I was skiing in the Alps I have not even thought about what amazing creatures inhabit these mountains. Thank you for having dispelled my ignorance
  • XGRA Apr 9, 2012 @ 1:16 pm | delete
Beautiful pictures and animals! BTW an owl is called "Eule" in German but an Eagle owl is called "Uhu" :)

  • BiminiBahamas Apr 4, 2012 @ 3:33 am | delete
Loved it. When I visited I watched the cows come down from the mountains. What a great show with the cows dressed up in their finery and the shepherds keeping them in line. Talk about a traffic jam, LOL!

  • JoanneOtt Mar 15, 2012 @ 2:32 pm | delete
Gorgeous photos! One of the things I like about the mountains is all the different wildlife that make it their home.

  • Floppppppp Apr 13, 2012 @ 12:16 pm | delete
Did you know black squirrels are becoming more common throughout central England? :)
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Feb 2, 2012 @ 10:17 am | delete
Appreciated this lovely feature on alpine animals. Always enjoy learning as much as possible about the fascinating world of wildlife. May we stop encroaching on their habitats and negatively impacting the delicate balance in which so many precariously exist.
  • PaulOnBooks Jan 9, 2012 @ 9:37 pm | delete
I've been lucky enough to see some of these in the flesh - skiing bores me so we went exploring with a local). Angel Blessed.

Ha this is a great question! I love animals so was curious right away. Nothing surprised me too much though. You should write about some mythical creatures that are legened to live there too.

Hi Great Lens on Alpine animals. There is a very similar animal to the Marmot that lives on Table Mountain in Cape Town. It's called a Dassie or Latin name a Rock Hyrax. Wonder if they are related?
  • WordCustard Nov 14, 2011 @ 2:04 am | delete
Oh I love the Dassie. I heard they are related to the elephant (seriously, if anyone thinks that's a joke, as I did first time I heard it). Not sure if there is any connection with the marmot although you are right, they look quite alike. I'll see if I can find out.

  • stockysister Nov 2, 2011 @ 1:31 pm | delete
I love the Ibex. Such a crazy guy! But the marmot! Gah!Too cute. I'd snuggle it if I knew it wouldn't scratch my face off for doing so. I hope to see the alps some day. Are the doormice the kind that the Romans ate? Have you been to the alps and seen each of these animals yourself?
  • WordCustard Nov 2, 2011 @ 1:45 pm | delete
I'd snuggle them all, but I don't know that any of them would like it much. :) Yes I've spent quite a bit of the Alps, but not seen all of these in the wild yet. And yes, I'm pretty sure the edible Dormouse is the one that the Romans ate, poor thing.

I did. Last summer we stayed with friends in the Swiss Alps. It was our great luck that they invited friends who biologists as they were, one a birder. With a giant telescope we watched for ibex on the ridges across the valley, and at night we froze while watching the stars through a haze free sky. The conversations about wildlife, among others, were fascinating. Quite a treat for an old city boy.

    A near perfect lens.

    Great lens, thanks!

A strange little creature, the Marmot.
Like Chamois and Rabbit they are not.
    They're shy and reserved
    and if you've deserved
you'll see them all right from your car - NOT!
  • WordCustard Dec 24, 2010 @ 5:18 am | delete
:D Well if there is one thing I did not expect to see today, it was a limerick about marmots!

Thanks Chris, and glad you enjoyed the lens GonnaFly and eclecticeducation (thank you too for a much appreciated angel blessing and to you both for kind comments!). I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas.

  • RacingRuby Sep 18, 2010 @ 6:12 pm | delete
This is a great lens. Very pretty pictures. The red squirrel is so cute. :)
Lynx is also pretty, but I wonder if it can be dangerous, too?
  • WordCustard Sep 19, 2010 @ 8:44 am | delete
Thank you for a lovely comment, Ruby! I don't know for sure but I bet the Lynx is only dangerous if it feels very threatened. It's not big like a tiger so is more likely to run away from us.
  • AndyPo Sep 13, 2010 @ 5:20 pm | delete
Great lens and photos. I'd love to see all of these animals in the wild, but some of them are most illusive and rather rare.
  • WordCustard Sep 14, 2010 @ 3:35 am | delete
Indeed they are. Those that have managed to survive in the wild keep well out of the way of humans... and who can blame them?
  • ArtByLinda Sep 9, 2010 @ 4:46 pm | delete
This is such a beautiful lens, love those gorgeous photos you have added here. I am surprised that so many of the animals in Europe are also in the United States, I guess were not so different in climate, eh? :)
  • WordCustard Sep 10, 2010 @ 10:03 am | delete
Thanks for such a kind comment, Linda. I had a similar reaction when I discovered that the alpine flowers we have here are pretty much the same as those you have in North America.

SquidAngel blessings to your wonderful animals of the Alps!

Not at all, Dom... they are still very rare and had to be reintroduced to the Alps in western Europe (they are a little more common in Scandinavia and eastern Europe). So you have every excuse not to know! Thank you kindly for the visit and angel blessing.
  • ulla_hennig Jan 29, 2010 @ 12:09 pm | delete

The funny think is, I was just walking along and he walked right out into the path in front of me. I had to simply stay still while he browsed around at my feet! So glad you liked this one, Mouse Angel.
