- Hi Great Lens on Alpine animals. There is a very similar animal to the Marmot that lives on Table Mountain in Cape Town. It's called a Dassie or Latin name a Rock Hyrax. Wonder if they are related?
-

-

Nov 14, 2011 @ 2:04 am | delete
- Oh I love the Dassie. I heard they are related to the elephant (seriously, if anyone thinks that's a joke, as I did first time I heard it). Not sure if there is any connection with the marmot although you are right, they look quite alike. I'll see if I can find out.

- I'd snuggle them all, but I don't know that any of them would like it much. :) Yes I've spent quite a bit of the Alps, but not seen all of these in the wild yet. And yes, I'm pretty sure the edible Dormouse is the one that the Romans ate, poor thing.

- I did. Last summer we stayed with friends in the Swiss Alps. It was our great luck that they invited friends who biologists as they were, one a birder. With a giant telescope we watched for ibex on the ridges across the valley, and at night we froze while watching the stars through a haze free sky. The conversations about wildlife, among others, were fascinating. Quite a treat for an old city boy.
A near perfect lens.
