Fruits Basket Anime Series

Fruits Basket follows the life of high-school student Tohru Honda, who was recently orphaned when her mother, Kyoko Honda, died in a car accident. After that, Tohru lived with her grandfather, but when his house needs remodeling, Tohru resorts to living in a tent in a forest and holds down a job to support herself. Despite suffering many hardships, Tohru remains optimistic.

One day, Tohru comes upon a house in the forest that is the home of her classmate Yuki Sohma and his cousin Shigure Sohma. When the Sohmas discover that Tohru is living in a tent, they are quite surprised by her inner strength. The entire area is Sohma property, and Tohru asks to be allowed to stay in her tent (affectionately dubbed "her castle"). Feeling sorry for her and desperate to end their bachelor days of filthy living conditions, the Sohmas offer her their spare room in exchange for cooking and housework. After a landslide buries her tent, including her mother's picture and school clothes, she has no option but to accept. Soon after she moves in, Kyo Sohma comes to challenge Yuki.

Tohru soon discovers the Sohma family's secret, and the reason why Yuki is so private and secretive at school: thirteen members of the family are possessed by the 12 animal spirits of the Chinese Zodiac (junish in Japanese) plus the spirit of the cat who was, according to legend, left out of the Zodiac. They transform into animals when hugged by the opposite sex or when put under a great deal of emotional or physical stress (such as being sick). When she promises to keep their secret, the Sohmas allow Tohru to keep her memories rather than hypnotically erasing them, a fate that had previously befallen anyone not "Inside" the Sohma family who had discovered the secret.

The story follows the lives of Tohru and the Sohma family, as they deal with each other and a society where neither quite fits in, as well as the feared Akito Sohma, head of the Sohma family. Soon, after living with the Sohma family she began to like, then love, all of the Sohmas, and sets out to break the zodiac curse.

Bio: Shigure is the older cousin and guardian of Yuki and Kyo. At 27 years old, Shigure is one of the oldest members of the Sohma family. A writer, Shigure is an easy going, all around nice guy who enjoys interacting in the lives of his younger family members. He is a good listener with a keen sense of right and wrong. Shigure is able to keep the most private of secrets, and will never let anyone down. Shigure's best friends are Hatori Sohma and Ayame Sohma. This trio has been friends since their childhood. Together their nickname is the Mabudachi Trio. While Ayame and Shigure get along very well, it's less certain how Hatori, who is always exasperated with them, became their friend.

Yuki may seem confident and fearless, but he has a scarred past that hides in the crevices of his fears. Yuki Sohma is the most popular guy at Kaibara Highschool. He even has his own fan club, which is rumored to consists of over half the girls at school. Yuki is very polite and kind towards other, but he claims to act like that so people could like him. Yuki's rival is the cat, Kyo Sohma. Yuki envies Kyo, who isn't stuck inside "that Sohma cage", so Yuki gets annoyed whenever Kyo talks about becoming one of the zodiac. Yuki appears to be better then Kyou in everything he does. They constantly fight each other over some of the silliest things.

Bio: Whenever he embraces a person of the opposite gender, he transforms into a cat. Kyo is really sensitive, so he is very easily angered.

He doesn't belong to the Chinese Zodiac exactly. In the story, the rat (Yuki Sohma) tricked the cat into thinking the banquet for the animals was a different day. In result, Kyo has never been treated like a true member of the Sohmas. It also means he cannot attend the Zodiac Banquet, just like in the story. Since the cat didn't attend the banquet, Kyo must always wear his red and white beads so he doesn't turn into the Cat's Evil Spirit (the red are supposedly colored with sacrificed blood and all the beads are made of bone). The Cat's Evil Spirit is what built up after the Cat realized he had been fooled. The Evil Spirit is Kyo's true form, and it is hideous. But Tohru somehow managed to get through to him, after much heartache, though.

Bio: Kagura Sohma is an interesting character. She is the boar of the zodiac and has extreme mood swings. Almost too extreme, like bipolar. Not only that, but like a real boar she has a one track mind.

When Kagura Sohma enters Fruits Basket she shows her sweet and innocent side. This all changes when she sees the love of her life, Kyo. Seeing him for the first time in four months, she runs to him so happily asking him questions and nearly in tears. She screams "I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!", and then proceeds to beat him into a bloody pulp, breaking down doors in the house. After that, she changes her mood yet again and cries to Kyo "who did this to you my love?" Kyo is not so affectionate to her, but she tries her best to make him happy... and messes up all of it to be Kyo's future wife. Kagura so badly wants to prove her love to Kyo that she carries a cat shaped bag with her always.

Bio: Momiji is a very energetic boy. He immediately likes Tohru, and wants to be her friend. He is always crying because Kyo picks on him. Despite acting sort of childish, Momiji is a very nice kid. He's part German and part Japanese, and he constantly switches between the two languages naturally

Those possessed by the Sohma curse are born two months early. This alone put a great amount of pressure on Momiji's mother, and to make things worse, when she tried to hold him he transformed. After this, Momiji's mother "broke". She was unable to smile, and she would snap when ever she saw him. It became so bad that they had to erase her memory. Momiji believed that, no matter how awful a memory is, it shouldn't be erased, but in order to help his mother recover, he agreed to have Hatori erase her memories. Afterwards, his mother recovered, and Momiji was not allowed to see her or his little sister Momo. His mother knows that he is part of the Sohma family, but believes he is someone else's son. Because she is not supposed to know him, he watches both Momo and his mother from afar. Despite his awful past, he's a very perky young boy.

Naturally suspicious of others, Hatori's zodiac animal is the dragon (seahorse).

Bio: Hatsuharu Sohma is one of the most interesting characters in Fruits Basket. Whenever he embraces a person of the opposite gender, he transforms into a cow. Haru has developed a split personality. The good side of him is "White Haru", the calmer, kinder, lazier, and less arrogant side. The bad side is "Black Haru", who is arrogant, rude, and rather violent. Even the smallest problem can trigger his black personality. His attitude change all started when he was little. He held a grudge against Yuki. People in his family always made fun of him about how the cow was stupid and let the rat used him. This made him mad, so mad that he developed a black personality. He soon had forgiven Yuki after he got to know him.

Haru is mostly seen wearing rockish attire, like biker clothes. Sadly, he only rides a bicycle because he's not old enough to ride a motorcycle. Haru is bisexual, as Haru does indeed like Yuki. He explained that to Tohru when Yuki got sick, stating that Yuki was "His first love."

Bio: Ayame is Yuki's older brother, but they are nothing alike. When embraced by the oposite gender, Ayame transforms into a snake. Ayame is much louder than Yuki, not to mention much more sure of himself. He is also egotistical and over-dramatic. He thinks that he is the most charming person in the world. Ayame tells Tohru all about how he was never really around Yuki all that much when they were growing up. Yuki was a very sick child so they were separated much of their youth. The separation created a barrier between the two brothers that has never been fixed.

Hiro seems to have no motivation to do anything to fix the anger that he causes. Since Kisa likes Tohru, Hiro becomes incredibly jealous over her. Sometimes it seems like all he wants to do is boss Tohru around. It doesn't change much until Tohru realizes that he is going through a stage where he realizes that he is still young, and Tohru understands that it's scary to come to that realization. When Hiro is hugged by a member of the opposite gender he transforms into a sheep.

He found that it always made him feel more comfortable to dress like a girl, but that only gave his parents even more to apologize for. Since he looks so much like a girl, that's what Tohru thought when she first saw him, until he accidently transformed. Somehow, Tohru convinced him that he does have a reason to live, he just hasn't found it yet.

Bio: Akito Sohma is the head of the Sohma household. Although he does not transform, he believes he has something to do with being god. When he comes to learn about Tohru Honda he decides to accept her and lets her in on the Sohma secret.

Akito seems like a demented person that has many problems. He gets sick easily, he has an uncontrollable temper, he's a control freak, and doesn't understand much about life. The things known about him are that he is basically evil and doesn't want anyone in the Sohma family who has the curse to really ineract with anyone outside.

In the past he has abused Yuki Sohma by whipping him at a young age. He also made Hatori Sohma go blind in one eye, causing him to lose his love. He demands that everyone respects him and follows him.

People born in the Year of the Rat are noted for their charm and attraction for the opposite sex. They work hard to achieve their goals, acquire possessions, and are likely to be perfectionists. Rat people are usually considered aggressive, ambitious, suspicious, and power-hungry, honest, generous, quick to anger and prone to spend freely.
