Music for you Anime Inspired RPG Sessions
Music adds spice to life. It adds more than a dash to RPGs. I've been using music in my games whenever I can. And my game buddies always bring their CDs or MP3s to game sessions. Not only do we get more atmosphere, we manage to share unusual finds.
Anime soundtracks, Movie soundtracks, Jpop and Jrock have all made their way to us. Its been a great mind opener.
This lens will have some of the music suited to playing during an RPG session. Of course this is just a sample. The kinds of music you can use are limited only by your imagination.

How it all began
becoming a fan the roundabout way
Blame it on BESM and Animax. And maybe a little ADnDOur RPG gaming group likes to use music in the games. It added atmosphere to the narrative and drama to the gameplay. We'd put on different kinds of music depending on the game we played. The Dungeons and Dragon games were spiced with fantasy movie tracks. Sci Fi games had Star Wars or Terminator playing in the background.
Eventually, we decided to start an Anime Inspired game. Naturally, people began digging around for the most readily available Japanese music: Anime Soundtracks.
That anime game eventually ended, but it did start a tradition of digging around for "unusual" music. Yes those are in quotes because I believe the term is relative. Besides, if you're pretending to fight ninja and death spirits, you tend to use that term rather loosely!

Music

Naruto
Naruto Music: traditional instruments modern beat
The series features music by composer Toshio Masuda. His work on Naruto is a mix of traditional and modern musical instruments which works well in fantastical adventures. Electric guitars with flutes and traditional drums on a rock beat - amazing!
Bleach
Bleach Music: hard instrumental rock
The Bleach soundtracks contain many instrumental pieces that are perfect for looping in the background. The instrumental rock pieces get that adrenalin pumping for action scenes and combat. But the music isn't just confined to that. "Blaze Of The Soul Reaper" makes a good mood piece for modern era games -its not so fast but it still expresses that hard-edged attitude. It's great for those exposition scenes where adversaries are facing off.
Yoshida Brothers
Rocking out on Samisen
These siblings update the style of playing on a traditional Japanese Musical instrument. The effect is great for mood setting. It's both identifiably Japanese and energetic enough for action sequences.

For Music Collectors
Some rare music from unusual anime
FullMetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist music: Anime gothic
Akira Senju's work on Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood produced a lot of moody orchestral pieces. The piece "Laws of Alchemy" sound particularly ominous especially with the choral. Perfect for those Villain's Entrance Scenes.
Fly Away Dreamer
Computer Game Music
This is another good source of background music. PC or Console RPGs try to evoke the same moods as the table-top games. Might as well use the music too.

Gundam Seed
J-Pop Instrumentals
Given the genre, its not surprising that Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED destiny have a lot of catchy modern music. However, the Gundam SEED Anime have music suited for instumental arrangements. Even the song Meteor works well as an instrumental and is usable for tabletop action sequences.

suggest some music
We'd like to hear about unusual artists and styles. It doesn't have to be just about anime.
However, If you do want a guide as to what RPG players use:
something fast for action scenes
something mellow for general background
something for suspense

- Pandora Hearts and Gundam Seed both have some awesome soundtracks which I use a lot in my sessions. PH has stuff that's good for both your chatting scenes and your really creepy stuff. GS I use for battles and for dramatic points. Wolf's Rain also has good ones for any postmodern setting.
