The Anita Blake Series

I have been a fan of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K Hamilton ever since I borrowed the first book in the series from my cousin a few years ago. I immediately fell in love with the world Mrs. Hamilton has created. I now own and have since read every book in the set at least three times. I absolutely love the storyline. If you enjoy stories with vampires, werewolves, magic, and anything supernatural, I highly recommend The Anita Blake series.

The has been a lot of fan outrage since the ninth book of the series came out and this lens is designed for everyone to discuss what they do and don't like about the erotic additions to the Anita Blake series.

Fan Dissension Over Erotic Additions to the Anita Blake Series

Since her ninth Anita Blake book was published, Laurell K Hamilton has taken a lot of dissension and flak for her change in writing style. Where previously the Anita series had been mostly a combination of horror, sci-fi, and drama, Laurell has since added an erotic side to the storyline. For reasons I don't quite understand, this has upset many a fan.

Oh, I understand to a point. Being an avid reader, I can relate to being furious with a storyline. I have mentally berated many an author because a book did not end the way I expected. Then, I realize it was not my choice. I did not write the story.

If the author has done his or her job, you feel like you are part of the story, or at least an observer. Once you get to know a character well enough, it almost feels like they are an old friend. You feel you should have some say in the choices they make. In reality, you have no say at all. You are along for the ride, wherever the author may take you.

What I do not understand in this case, is how some once devoted fans of Laurell K. Hamilton's have publicly turned on her as they have. Some have sent angry emails berating her for her choices. I have visited many forums where supposed fans are belittling the storyline they once loved. Laurell has even had to defend her series in public interviews.

These so called fans should realize that, no matter how much they have come to love the Anita Blake books or the characters involved, they have no right to try to tell Mrs. Hamilton how the series should unfold. The idea for the story, the world in which the story is set, and the characters involved were born inside her head. Laurell, as the author, has complete control over how the storyline progresses. She should not have to defend that right.

Here's What I Think

In my opinion, these readers should remember why they enjoyed the Anita Blake series in the first place. The world Laurell K Hamilton has created is fantastic. The story is so detailed and defined; you can almost see it playing out in your mind. The characters are so real; you feel that you know them personally. Mrs. Hamilton writes in such a way that you feel you are there watching the story unfold. That is why I started reading and fell in love with the series, and I am willing to bet that many other readers became fans for the same reasons.

That being said, my final point is this. Laurell K Hamilton has never shied from the graphic descriptions in her battle scenes. Every physical confrontation is described in vivid detail. So why would we expect her to shy away from describing the more erotic scenes in her story?

Previous Feedback

The content for this lens was originally published on HubPages. I decided to more it here to Squidoo where I thought it would get more attention. My article had already received some feedback while it was on HubPages and I thought those comments would add to this lens. Here they are for your reading enjoyment.

sayitaintso:
Good article. I agree. I have viewed forums in which these former fans, who are now disgruntled with the direction Laurell K. Hamilton has now taken the character Anita and her books, and they resort to name-calling the author and the characters in the book themselves (as if they were real people!lol). I am no blind fan, nor am I extremely disgusted with the author and the books, and yet to try to reason with these people is like trying to reason with a rabid dog. You are labelled all kinds of unkind names and obviously have little to no intelligence, for who else but the blindy stupid would read these books? Now, I'm game for any kind of civil discussion and debate, but not when someone I'm debating views me as somehow beneath them since I still enjoy the books. So I also believe it's a testament to how very good an author that Laurell K. Hamilton is, that she can create a character(s) so life-like and a world so detailed and alive that people relate to the characters and books so much so that they get this upset over changes in the character. The author has done their job well if that's the case. Kudos to Laurell K. Hamilton!

crystal_booth:
sayitaintso, I very much agree with your comments. These fans are taking the changes to the story very personally. I don't really like all the erotic changes either, but it is till a fantastic series. Laurell K Hamilton has done an exceptinal job creating such a lifelike alternate reality. Thanks for your support!

Lewis:
I have read a lot that you've written about these books, and even though I don't read fiction books at all, I may well read one! Not because of anything to do with battle scenes or erotic scenes. No way! Just because of your enthusiasm for the series!

crystal_booth:
LOL Thanks Lewis! I am very enthusiastic about this series. It is one of the best written alternate reality stories I have ever read.

marie says:
Personally, I believe the erotic makes these books that much more. I mean think about it who doesn't like sex? Especially mixed with the vampires, werewolves, and let's not forget wereleopards. Speaking of which, I would love to have a Micah wouldn't you?

crystal_booth:
Thanks for you comments, Marie. I have wished for a Micah myself. :) And I agree with you that sex mixed with the vampires and were-animals theme isn't all bad. I just think sometimes it is a little much.

What do you think about the erotic changes to the Anita Blake series?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

The series is great just the way it is! I love the erotic additions to the storyline.

bran says:

i have no problem with all the sex it adds to the story and for the people who are upset about all the men anita fell in love with some major bad guy is going to come along kill one or more of her boyfriends. my money is on micah but the series is fine where it is ( it did feel a little awkward reading about how anita sucked nevermind)

aquarian_insight says:

I'm somewhere in the middle actually. Sometimes, for me personally, I feel it detracts from the story, but she explains it well and it is still a great series. I'm still a fan no matter how many men Anita has. & anyway, maybe my discomfort is what the author intended, after all, Anita herself is not always comfortable with it.

Logan says:

I've got to say, I love the series. I started reading it when I was a teenager, and I still await each new book with my wallet ready. For me the eroticism is a fun addition and doesn't bother me, but I do sometimes wish there was a bit more conflict that isn't on an emotional level. Even so, these books are so above and beyond others in the genre that I'll keep on reading them until she stops writing. Anita and the rest of LKH's world captivate me to this day.

Tahari says:

While I do love the erotic additions to the series, I have to admit that for while they almost seemed to overwhelm the books' plotlines and I can see if you were someone who really loved those paranormal murder mystery plots, why you might get upset over the change. I was very glad when the later books went more back to the early roots of the series, yet still retained its midway erotic yumminess.

xagemox says:

I think the changes are nice. Maby more intrige and horro and some new bad super villain. Didnt like when the darkness died.

babydoll1480 says:

I enjoy a little sex in my books but there has sure been a lot of it in the latest Anita Blake installments. I really enjoyed these books but I like a little plot to go with all the sex LOL . I am somewhere inbetween. I don't think it is great but it is not destroyed either.

Jamie, from Nashville says:

Love the stories - it's one of the reasons I'm so thankful for the ability to read, in general. Talk about a 'guilty pleasure'... Just finished the 19th book and am even more of a fan! (so many lost hours of sleep as i read until i just can't...and obsess about getting to pick the book up again...) The eroticism is 'over the top' because Anita's world is 'over the top', in general. Imagine if food was actually the emotions sparked by sex & love? We all need to eat, right? We need to eat so others around us can do what they need to do - maybe not quite so literally, like for Damian, but pretty close. It's not too much of a stretch, when you understand that she gives herself (literally) for others - through the ardeur and even in her necromancy. The stakes are too high for her to just do what she believed, not so long ago, to be the 'right thing' - sex with only one person would probably kill that person or the ones that depend on her - and walking away from the 'triumverate' power structure, that would crumble without her, isn't an option, either. Too much that she loves (ACTUALLY loves!) is at stake for her at this point. The story is very complex and amazing. I'm also amazed at our fair author's ability to keep this storyline so fresh, thrilling, and emotionally fulfilling (chapter 25 of "Bullet" had me crying like a baby!) so, no matter what, I, for one, will follow Anita and her world for as long as it's open to me. I hope that these books continue for a long, long time, because I will be right there on book launch day, ready to dive right in with her, Jean Claude, Richard, Michah, Nathaniel, etc., etc.!

Denise says:

I really enjoy the changes in the series. Ms. Hamilton has an imagingation that I wish I could be brave enough to have or let be known.

TrueFan.... says:

I believe that the only people complaining and belittling the sexual scenes, (which i think are amazing) in Hamilton's series are the people who wish them to be true... people tend to hate what they most want in others...Hamilton is one of the most talented and amazing writers of all time!! Her fantastic use of painting the pictures she does in her stories and the creativity that shines through in her writings make the rest of us peasants weep with the beauty of it...envy is an ugly thing and those that want to complain should just leave the series to those of us that are the true fans...no other author comes close to Hamilton and I have read Harrison and Meyers and Briggs and they are great, but they just dont compare...

tammy says:

Love it, love it, love it! I started with Cerulean Sins, now I'm going back for more.

Sweetwhysper says:

I agree that readers have no room to say anything about how a story turns out. If they want a specific outcome, they should write their own stories. I LOVE the books, and frankly, from book 9 on are my favorites. I felt Anita needed love in her life, and now she's got it. I just started re-reading the series for the 3rd or 4th time, and can't wait until February 2nd (even if it ends up being a novella) for my next 'fix' of Nathaniel...I mean Anita :o)

kaos says:

i love the books and i think a little spice has been great. It has been done very taste fully.

Kim Private says:

I actually like the sex in these books. When I think about vampires, I think about very sexy men who are impossible to resist. And with LKH's description of how beautiful Jean Claude is and how gorgeous and built Richard and the rest of the were-animals are, it just seems natural.
I understand some people think it's too much, but this is adult fiction. This is not a story written for teens like Twilight.
Let's remember that the author has a plan for her story and that these are the characters she is bringing to life for us.
I say continue with the eroticism. It makes for a suspenseful and sexy story.

Gloria Jean Campbell says:

I also borrowed my first Anita book and have since come to own all 17 and eagerly await the next. I agree with you. Has no one realized with Anita's hangups the ardeur is hard on her. Don't we all have our own demons to face. Her's are just different from ours.

tracy r. says:

i love it. it would just be better (my opinion) if it didnt make up half of the book i liked it better when there was more action(not in the bed). dont get me wrong i like the sex scenes but less would be better.

TheFragile says:

I don't care what other readers think. The erotic scenes here and there were just a change, because it's something that the character had to do in the storyline, and if any one of those who are complaining have read the Meredith Gentry series, they would realize it's actually quite tame compared to some of the other scenes she's written. Part of the reason we as readers love this world, is that it's real to a certain extent, and the characters' in it become real to us. People have sex, why shouldn't characters' who are in a FANTASY novel have amazing sex and take us along for the ride? I know there are women out there who have had a boyfriend, just finished one of the books, and started wishing they were having sex with Micah, or Richard, because the one in real life isn't so great at it. (Me...) If it upsets them that much they had no right to call themselves a fan in the first place. The world that's been woven by Laurell K. Hamilton is an amazing one that's easy to get lost in and enjoy. Take the sex scenes like you would any other scene, it's a part of the story, and she's got one great imagination. Don't complain. Just go along for the ride.

Kortne Layne says:

that Anita deserves the changes in her world and if that in any way reflects the changes in hamillton's life then good for her... I love the route she has taken.. Who wouldn't want to have sex with beautiful supernatural characters all on the up and up?? The only change I would make would be in the area of Anita not being quite so hetero.. I'm a lover of both genders so naturally I wouldn't mind seeing some fair play in the gender game of sexual fantasy!! But the men are beautiful and makes me a lil jealous.. but all great authors are diverse in their worlds they have created and grow and evolve.. if the worlds stay stagnant then, in my opinoin, the writer falls short of imagination. And One thing Hammillton will never fall short on is imagination.. Plus reading is a form of escape and escaping to sex with beautiful men.. whats not to love!!

says:

I haven't read any of these books, but if you've read Anne Rice, then you wouldn't blush at anything. To me, that's what vampires are all about-their erotic sexual behavior. The first vampire story I read was Carmilla, so that stuff has been intertwined with these types of stories since they first started.

papawu says:

I have actually read just about everything she has written, and have found eroticism in all of her books. The only ones that lacked it were her very early books like "Death of a Dark Lord" and "Nightshade." If there are any Anita Blake novels I have not read, then I don't know about them. True, some contain more eroticism than others, but all in all, I don't think her books would be the same without it.

Kim says:

I think that the erotic changes have brought Anita to a new level! I have loved watching her change her attitude to the "monsters". I quite enjoy the erotic and it just makes her more real and believable.

Laurell K Hamilton has completely distroyed this series, and there is not hope for it now.

Jas_Cru says:

I am up to Incubus dreams. I really liked the earlier stuff, and am no prude. I am a 30 something man, and love most fantasy type series and like porn, written or visual. However, I am beginning to feel like the target audience has now become a sub-urban sexually frustrated housewife. Sort of Hustler letters to the editor meets Mills & Boons. The only exciting thing that Anita has done in this book so far is go down into a cellar. The rest of it is really boring monotonous sex. Just because there are different men does not make it more interesting. Is this what the rest of the series will be, because then I intend bailing. There has to be a good story to go along with the sex, or else we are just reading porn (but really boring porn)

christina says:

once upon a time my husband and i both read these books with a strong female protagonist. she was kick ass, took no shit, and didn't need to have sex 20 times a day to function. hamilton killed her, and invaded her character's body with a vapid, hormone driven twit. shame.....i keep hoping there's even a little sense of loyalty to the character hamilton created, and i periodically check out her latest books. saw "bullet" in CVS yesterday and thought "what the hell". it's under tonight's lasagna now....in the trash.

Tonya says:

I'm a reader whose found it very difficult to continue the series. At times I feel like I'm reading porn. I'm not a prude by any means but sometimes the sex stuff just goes on way too long and frankly it's boring. At times I honestly felt really annoyed! I stopped reading the book right before Micah. I never not finish a book but I just couldn't take it anymore. Looking for something else - sorry Anita :)

Destiny says:

The way I see it, halfway through writing the series, LKH decided she should have wrote a series where every book features a different pairing. IT being too late for this she thought, "Who's going to have sex with all of these hot men?" Of course, Anita Blake was the only woman up for the task.

Bottom line:I liked Anita Blake better when she kicked ass. Now she just gives ass.

naya says:

I started with the first book in the series and was instantly intrigued by Anita's world. And I liked her for being strong and sticking to her principles. So, I'm sad to see her reduced to this. Perhaps if I hadn't read the first four books, but started with latter titles, I wouldn't be so disappointed now. I like the old Anita much, much more. I'm pretty sure that the old Anita would observe today's Anita with indifferent disregard ? to say the least!

Ryan says:

The first four blew my mind. I thought LKH was a genius, and she was. As I read on the books gradually became less appealing to me. Books' five through eight weren't bad, but just weren't as good as the earliest ones to me. After awhile i just gave up because I can't deal with Anita being a slut. What bothered me wasn't that there was sex in the books. It was that the plot was based around it. Like does Anita have to fuck everyone in the book just to defeat the bad guy? It stopped being believable. I understand the book is fictional and abstract to begin with, but come on now. To say LKH wrote the books and can do whatever she wants with him is insulting to the readers. If a fan is with you every step of the way and supporting you by buying your books don't mindfuck them by destroying the characters. Anita used to be a respectable character. Maybe a bitch and a murderer, but still respectable. Now I wish they would have killed her off early on for her own good. If LKH wanted to explore a different writing style I understand that, but don't bring it into a book that already has solid themes. It should have stayed in the awful Mary Gentry series where it belonged. I miss old Anita. I wish LKH would have made more like laughing corpse before Anita spread her legs for St. Louis. I really liked the detective/mystery style that all came together in the end of that book. It actually made me sad when I stopped liking the books.

Andrew says:

She is turning her series from horror fantasy to erotic fiction. If she wants to right about all the sex she can but then she should be in another catagory. Also shes killing the characters. Before Jean claude use to be all into her persuing demanding and all that. now hes a *ussywhiped boy and 90% of the time he isnt getting it one of another 20 guys is.

Andrew says:

Also she changes so much she goes from before when she sposivly had morals she wouldnt shoot someone for flirting or getting graby. now she will shoot someone for looking at her wrong. the char is too confusing

Renee says:

I like Hamilton's vampire world but I prefer the first 8 books. The eroticism is over the top and I hardly believe that so many men are willing to share but not be shared. No woman has that kind of power over men. Also, Anita wears so many hats now she hardly seem real. How is it that she a necromancer and vampire executioner and animator and human servant and leader of the leopards and lupa to the wolves and has two animals to call and has a vampire servant and has the ardeur to deal with me? The most disappointing part of the series for me is the weakening of Jean-Claude's character. He was so strong and fierce in the earlier books and now he seems to be little more than Anita's puppet. Men don't have to be weak for women to be strong.

Chloe says:

I LOVE this series. The first ten books are by far my favorite books I've ever read. In the more recent books though, they've been more about the sex than Anita kicking butt and riding the world of evil. These last few books have gotten, dare I say, dirty. I don't care for it one bit; and as much as I love this series, I'm not keeping or liking the recent books. If I wanted to read more exotic books, I'd read her other series about the Faery Princess.

Wayfarer says:

Ok, first I'll tell you that I've never raised my voice in a lkh or Anita Blake forum before, nor have I adressed anyone in writing on the subject. Second, english is not my first language, so I might make a few mistakes.

Like many others I had a wtf-reaction during NIC, but initially I expected Anita to gain some control over the ardeur, and kept on reading until Incubus Dreams, where I finally gave entirely up on this series. The reason is this:

1) The story is gone (there's no real mystery or plot anymore and I really read for those, character development being mere icing on the cake.)
2) Anita is a demi-god. (Anita's picking up far too many powers, animals etc.Soon she'll cough and raise every skelton on the continent. This, in my opinion, makes her quite dull.)
3) All the men seem to have lost their personalities, and are now part of her faceless, interchangable harem. They might as well be inflatable dolls for all the difference or personality I see between them now. They have no life apart from Anita, and only exist to *uck her and stroke her ego.
4) Anita's not Anita anymore. Sure she keeps whining that she hates the arseur and what it makes her do, but du you see her working 24/7 trying to find some sort of control? I sure don't, instead she just seems to accept it, and the old Anita would have fought tooth and nail against anything trying to control her. And the ardeur is just that.
5) The ardeur is a date.rape drug.It takes control of people, even enslaves them and most certainly make them go against their own morals"wishes. That, for me, taints every sex-scene starring Anita, and makes quite a few of them painful and sort of sad rather than exiting in any way. If Anita had CHOSEN to have sex with many it would be fine with me, but I just can't stand the forced nymphomaniac thing.
6) The sex scenes are actually rather dull/repetitive, and yes, boring. In my opnion it reads more like a manual than anything else, and is devoid of emotion and sexiness. I've read much more interesting erotica elsewhere, and I really don't thinnk this is lkh's strongest side.

Finally I'll tell that I'm in my late 30's and out of the 7 other people (same age) I know who originally read this series, only 1 remain a fan/reader. All the rest has dropped it because the plot has been substituted by dull and meaningless sexscenes.

I wonder if age is a facor in who like or dislike the erotic changes? I've seen it suggested that most of the present fans are quite young, but I have no idea whether it's true.

Hardyhar says:

I don't mind all the sex, really I don't. I don't even mind that in the later Anita Blake books all major plots are resolved through sex. Really, what I do mind is that Laurells characters have all gone stagnant. Sure, they get new magical abilities now and then (after sex), but they keep having the same emotional problems over and over again. And then instead of resolving these side plots Laurell just goes on and adds another sexual partner/character to keep it fresh, a character that is all but forgotten in the next book.

So yeah, the erotic changes to the books have, in my opinion, changed the books for the worse.

Me says:

While I agree that it is, ultimately, it is LKH's decision about what to do with the series, I was really disappointed to find such a promising series veer of at practically right angles. Much of what I liked about the books is either gone now or so buried among rubbish that the story is no longer worth reading.

LKH's books are great. They have great plot and very descriptive and developed characters. She writes too descriptively in a manner where we can vividly imagine those erotic situations that's why many shy away or despise the books. I think the people who shy away when they encounter such in books are very same to the way human treat Anita in the books. We know she hardly has human friends anymore except good ol' Ted. She used to be RPIT's pet necromancer and they gladly used her expertise on occasions they needed help but when she's the one who's in trouble they raise their eyebrow and look at her like she's not one of them anymore. The same with the books. People liked the early books when it meets their morality but because of their closed minds on the later books they shut away and curse it. In truth I almost stopped reading somewhere in Cerulean Sins but I just couldn't forgive myself not to know what happens to Anita. She has her ups and downs just like anybody does.

I know I will probably get some backlash but let me say this first, I LOVE the 9 books. In fact I could hardly get myself to put them down. However, since then I have really found that I hating them more and more. As another poster put "the erotic parts have begun to overshadow the plot and storyline. I am all for sex in a book in fact I thought the leve of sex in the first 9 books was great! But ever since the arduer came into play, at such a level, I just can't seem to find myself getting into the stories. I loved the kick ass, bad ass character that Anita started out as. She was independent, strong, stubborn and had some morals. However, all the development that Laurell created in the first 9 books is now being de-developed (don't think that's a word but I couldn't think of the correct one). I really wish there was less sex and more of the plot and story that I grew to love in the first 9 books.

I have read all of the novels and while I found the sex to be okay at first, I did find that the sex began to take more prominence than any other parts of the storyline. It's not that I don't like reading about sex, it's just that endless pages of sex, which isn't particularly well written to be honest, has taken away from the otherwise sharp storytelling. Having said that, I do love all of the characters and while Anita is a pain sometimes, who admits that she's hard to live with, the men around her are interesting enough to be developed into more than just sex toys. I enjoyed the last book, however, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
