Coulter is the legal correspondent for Human Events magazine and writes a syndicated column for Universal Press Syndicate.

Her loyal conservative admirers defend her as a bracing tonic to political correctness. Ann Coulter's detractors on the left call her polarizing and accuse her of printing falsehoods and stirring up controversy for the sake of publicity.

Coulter has also clashed with pundits and publishers on her own side of the ideological aisle.

She famously parted company with National Review, following a dispute over her now-notorious column following the September 11 attacks (in which her friend Barbara Olsen was murdered.)

Long-time admirer David Horowitz took issue with Coulter's rehabilitation of Joe McCarthy in her 2003 book Treason. Horowitz's online magazine Front Page held a "pro and con "symposium" about the book later that year.

Ann Coulter has been fired and rehired, banned and unbanned, from venues as diverse as MSNBC (twice) to the annual GOP confab CPAC.

As she noted in her 2009 book Guilty, each year seems to bring an incident that critics predict will "end Ann Coulter's career forever" -- and yet, she's still around, as popular/controversial as ever, with a new bestseller due out in 2010.

Ann Coulter's weekly column (Jan 26, 2011)

'Hope, change and invest'

Ann Coulter (Robert Wright/NYT)"Obama compared 'investing' in education to our sending a man to the moon after the Russians launched Sputnik. Say, who was the president who recently gutted spending on NASA? Oh yes, that was Obama.

"So he reminded us of the glory days of the space program, but now he's taking that money and funneling it to public-school teachers. As the Democrats say: 'If we can put a man on the moon, why can't we hire another 10,000 public-school teachers?'

Ann Coulter's Canadian controversy

Coulter's first tour of Canadian universities sparks riot, lawsuits and debate

Ann Coulter coming to Canada

In March 2010, the International Free Press Society (Canada) and the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute sponsored Ann Coulter's first ever tour of college campuses.

As it turned out, this was no ordinary speaking tour. For the first time in her career, Ann Coulter was actually prevented from speaking at one campus, when "anti-racist" demonstrators threatened her safety.

That was after that Provost at the same university threatened to charge Coulter with violating Canada's stringent "hate speech" laws -- before she'd even set foot in the country!

For reports on what happened during Ann Coulter's 2010 tour of Canada, check out these posts below, written as events were happening, by eyewitnesses.

Ann Coulter even linked to these reports from her homepage! They include photos, video and lots of opinion, background and reaction.

* Ann Coulter's successful University of Western Ontario event
* Ann Coulter's cancelled University of Ottawa event
* Ann Coulter's successful University of Calgary event

Profiles of Ann Coulter

More or less friendly magazine & newspaper profiles

TIME magazine cover story: "Ms Right" (2005)
Excerpt:

I began to wonder, in a moistly liberal formulation, whether Ann Coulter might be ... misunderstood? All her right-wing capering aside ("We've got to attack France!"), Coulter was an Ivy League--educated legal writer before she was a TV pundit. She's an omnivorous reader (everything from her friend Matt Drudge's website to the works of French philosopher Jacques Ellul), and she isn't afraid to begin a column on Bush, as she did in January, "Maybe he is an idiot."
The Guardian (UK): "An Appalling Magic" (2003)
Excerpt:

Maybe there are plenty of provocative writers with a knack for arousing their readers to adoration or anger. Perhaps there are plenty of rightwing American pundits, filling their country's radio and cable TV schedules with polemical bile. But Coulter is something special. Some of the magic works in print, but it's on TV - and in person - that you get the full experience. She has a magnetism that sets her apart from the bulk of the talking-head industry: once you see her, it's hard to look away. Suddenly you stop clicking the remote and just stay transfixed, staring at the TV - your jaw slack with disbelief at her sheer gall. The sweeping extremism of her statements coupled with her consuming self-confidence: it's a compulsive combination.
Jambands (Grateful Dead fansite): "Deadheads Are What Liberals Claim to Be But Aren't" (2006)
Excerpt:

When I called the Clare Booth Luce Policy Institute, whose chairwoman gives speeches on topics with titles like "The Failures of Feminism", and told the gatekeeper there that I wanted to do an interview with Ann Coulter solely about the Grateful Dead, there was a small pause. Then she recovered and politely told me to send her an e-mail, which she would forward to Ann. That, I expected, would be the end of it.

When I got home that night, and saw an e-mail in my box from Ann Coulter, I thought "how polite of her to send a rejection letter rather than simply ignoring my proposal." Instead, I found that she had somehow written "I'd love to! Good website!" While she was delayed by a round of speeches to make up due to strep throat, and other events life throws out, we kept shooting e-mails back and forth and I discovered a secret that I will reveal despite the damage to her reputation that it may cause: Ann is really cool and really funny. The few friends I talked with about this said "What? You of all people are getting along with Ann Coulter?!" It was easy and simple to do: we never talked policy. It was a joy talking with her, even if we don't agree on everything (most politics, and "Alabama Getaway" sucks).

What followed was the most surreal interview I have ever done in my life.

"Is It True What They Say About Ann?" (2004)

Documentary about Ann Coulter

This 40-minute (plus bonus footage) documentary film by Patrick Wright and Elinor Burkett (neither of whom are doctrinaire conservatives) is a mostly sympathetic film about Ann Coulter.

The filmmakers follow Coulter from TV studio to college campus, as she promotes her latest book.

Bonus features:

* An additional 40 minutes of exclusive interviews with Ann

* Ann letting loose with her fans at the Conservative Political Action Caucus (CPAC)

* Ann eviscerating a special issue of the New York Times

* The Ann Coulter Photo album

A must for Ann Coulter fans. I've screened this short documentary for conservative friends who were indifferent to or hostile to her, who came away with a new perspective.

Ann Coulter video (Feb 20, 2010)

Ann Coulter at CPAC (part one)

Alex Knepper liveblogged Ann Coulter's 2010 CPAC speech:

111:56 - Overflow crowd. However, there are about 100 empty seats in the reserved seating section. But hey - I'm up in the press section, so what do I care?

11:57 - Here she is, in a trademark slinky black dress!

11:58 - "What a difference a year makes" is the general mood of the conference.

11:59 - "Ted Kennedy's probably rolling in his grave, dropping his drink."

12:01 - Standard Coulter. Lots of great jokes. What can I say?

12:03 - "Sarah Palin has created more jobs than Obama has: eleven at the AP alone, to fact-check her book!"

12:03 - The new commission on fiscal responsibility's first recommendation: Resign, please! The second recommendation: Stop wasting money on commissions!

12:04 - "Why couldn't Obama have picked someone respectable as his running mate, like John Kerry did?"

12:05 - "Edwards is like a creepy, blow-dried evangelical, without the belief in God."

12:07 - The upside of the cap-and-trade bill: if it passes, DC will finally see snow again!"

12:08 - "Jimmy Carter said that most people who oppose Obama's health care plan are motivated by racism. And if there's one guy who has his finger on the pulse of what Americans are thinking, it's Jimmy Carter!"

12:09 - "CNN calls them 'Teabaggers,' which is the gayest term I've ever heard on CNN besides 'Anderson Cooper.'"

12:09 - "The last time I heard this much race-baiting, I was sitting in my front-row pew at United Church of Trinity!"

12:10 - "You've been a great crowd, considering that you're my paid shills from the insurance company. God bless America, thank you for being here, and Keith Olbermann is a girl."

Question time

12:11 - Whoever we run for president, don't tell the media who it is until a month before the election, so the media doesn't hone in on them and destroy them - because they're so obsessed with "Who's your leader? Who's your leader? Glenn Beck? Michael Steele? Sarah Palin?"

12:12 - To a questioner about the North Carolina press not covering John Edwards: "I can't believe anyone here is still relying on newspapers for news!"

12:16 - A high school student is asking her how to be persuasive. In all fairness, Ann Coulter isn't really the person to ask about being persuasive.

12:17 - A questioner says that the 'C' doesn't stand for 'Libertarian,' asks if libertarianism is conservatism, because of foreign policy and abortion. Coulter: "I'm more libertarian than most libertarians, I just wish they'd stop babbling about the legalization of pot. Shouldn't we focus on eliminating the departments of Agriculture, Commerce, and Education?" Crowd yells: "End the Fed!" Coulter: "We're far away from the perfect libertarian state where you can take whatever drugs you want and I don't have to pay for you when you lose your job."

12:19 - Gold standard? Audit the Fed? End the Fed? "Um, if Ron Paul is behind it and it has nothing to do with foreign policy, I agree."

12:20 - Have you ever dated a liberal before? "They weren't liberal for long%u2026"

12:21 - She's apparently forgotten the middle and end mic lines. Some girl is now babbling on and on and on about her own opinions - Ann Coulter's like "OK, we're all concerned about Obama, I need to catch a plane, OK"

12:22 - "I'm from Massachusetts, and for the first time in my life, I'm proud to be from there" "OK, that's a great note to end it on, thank you!"
