Ann Coulter's bio in brief

Ann Coulter is the author of seven New York Times bestsellers:

* High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton (Regnery 1998)
* Slander: Liberal Lies About the American Right (Crown, 2002)
* Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism (Crown Forum, 2003)
* How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must): The World According to Ann Coulter (Crown Forum, 2004)

* If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans (Crown Forum, 2007)
* Guilty: Liberal "Victims" and Their Assault on America (Crown Forum, 2009)

Coulter is the legal correspondent for Human Events magazine and writes a syndicated column for Universal Press Syndicate.

Her loyal conservative admirers defend her as a bracing tonic to political correctness. Ann Coulter's detractors on the left call her polarizing and accuse her of printing falsehoods and stirring up controversy for the sake of publicity.

Coulter has also clashed with pundits and publishers on her own side of the ideological aisle.

She famously parted company with National Review, following a dispute over her now-notorious column following the September 11 attacks (in which her friend Barbara Olsen was murdered.)

Long-time admirer David Horowitz took issue with Coulter's rehabilitation of Joe McCarthy in her 2003 book Treason. Horowitz's online magazine Front Page held a "pro and con "symposium" about the book later that year.

Ann Coulter has been fired and rehired, banned and unbanned, from venues as diverse as MSNBC (twice) to the annual GOP confab CPAC.

As she noted in her 2009 book Guilty, each year seems to bring an incident that critics predict will "end Ann Coulter's career forever" -- and yet, she's still around, as popular/controversial as ever, with a new bestseller due out in 2010.

Ann Coulter's weekly column (December 2, 2009)

"Do smoking guns cause global warming, too?"

Ann Coulter (photo via blackvoices.com)"They won't tell us what Sen. Joe McCarthy lied about. They say: Historians are agreed that McCarthy was a liar. (These are the same historians who also stated as fact that 'few American Communists were spies' -- until decrypted Soviet cables proved that the Communist Party was awash with Soviet spies.)

"This is precisely what liberals accuse Christians of doing, but which Christians never do. We don't cite the Bible as authority - and then refuse to let anyone read it. We certainly don't claim to have 'lost' it, so you can't check for yourself. But that's exactly what the CRU has done with its secret data allegedly showing a warming Earth..."

Help bring Ann Coulter to a Canadian campus in 2010

Andrew Lawton is a Canadian university student trying to bring Ann Coulter to his campus next year. Here's part of what he has to say:

"We've done quite a bit of fundraising in this effort thus far, but unfortunately the work isn't done yet. We're planning this event for early March, 2010, and every single penny we can get towards this effort counts.

"We've already received generous support for this free event from bloggers in Canada and the United States, and some generous donations from locals in and around London, but we need your help to make it happen.

"We are able to accept donations via check (snail mail) or PayPal, and though as a student organization we can't offer tax receipts, you will be given full recognition and thanks for your contribution, as well as having guaranteed seating at this event should you be able to attend :) .

"If you wish, we can promote your business in the event flyer as well.

"Additionally, Ann Coulter has agreed to do a PRIVATE RECEPTION with some of our donors. If you are interested in donating a higher amount for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, please contact us for more details.

"Any help you can offer will be much appreciated... our campus has already done enough to suppress free speech... it can't go on for much longer!"

Profiles of Ann Coulter

More or less friendly magazine & newspaper profiles

TIME magazine cover story: "Ms Right" (2005)
Excerpt:

I began to wonder, in a moistly liberal formulation, whether Ann Coulter might be ... misunderstood? All her right-wing capering aside ("We've got to attack France!"), Coulter was an Ivy League--educated legal writer before she was a TV pundit. She's an omnivorous reader (everything from her friend Matt Drudge's website to the works of French philosopher Jacques Ellul), and she isn't afraid to begin a column on Bush, as she did in January, "Maybe he is an idiot."
The Guardian (UK): "An Appalling Magic" (2003)
Excerpt:

Maybe there are plenty of provocative writers with a knack for arousing their readers to adoration or anger. Perhaps there are plenty of rightwing American pundits, filling their country's radio and cable TV schedules with polemical bile. But Coulter is something special. Some of the magic works in print, but it's on TV - and in person - that you get the full experience. She has a magnetism that sets her apart from the bulk of the talking-head industry: once you see her, it's hard to look away. Suddenly you stop clicking the remote and just stay transfixed, staring at the TV - your jaw slack with disbelief at her sheer gall. The sweeping extremism of her statements coupled with her consuming self-confidence: it's a compulsive combination.
Jambands (Grateful Dead fansite): "Deadheads Are What Liberals Claim to Be But Aren't" (2006)
Excerpt:

When I called the Clare Booth Luce Policy Institute, whose chairwoman gives speeches on topics with titles like "The Failures of Feminism", and told the gatekeeper there that I wanted to do an interview with Ann Coulter solely about the Grateful Dead, there was a small pause. Then she recovered and politely told me to send her an e-mail, which she would forward to Ann. That, I expected, would be the end of it.

When I got home that night, and saw an e-mail in my box from Ann Coulter, I thought "how polite of her to send a rejection letter rather than simply ignoring my proposal." Instead, I found that she had somehow written "I'd love to! Good website!" While she was delayed by a round of speeches to make up due to strep throat, and other events life throws out, we kept shooting e-mails back and forth and I discovered a secret that I will reveal despite the damage to her reputation that it may cause: Ann is really cool and really funny. The few friends I talked with about this said "What? You of all people are getting along with Ann Coulter?!" It was easy and simple to do: we never talked policy. It was a joy talking with her, even if we don't agree on everything (most politics, and "Alabama Getaway" sucks).

What followed was the most surreal interview I have ever done in my life.

"Is It True What They Say About Ann?" (2004)

Documentary about Ann Coulter

This 40-minute (plus bonus footage) documentary film by Patrick Wright and Elinor Burkett (neither of whom are doctrinaire conservatives) is a mostly sympathetic film about Ann Coulter.

The filmmakers follow Coulter from TV studio to college campus, as she promotes her latest book.

Bonus features:

* An additional 40 minutes of exclusive interviews with Ann

* Ann letting loose with her fans at the Conservative Political Action Caucus (CPAC)

* Ann eviscerating a special issue of the New York Times

* The Ann Coulter Photo album

A must for Ann Coulter fans. I've screened this short documentary for conservative friends who were indifferent to or hostile to her, who came away with a new perspective.

Ann Coulter: Wikipedia

Ann Hart Coulter (born December 8, 1961) is an American social and political commentator, best-selling author, and syndicated columnist. She frequently appears on television, radio, and as a speaker at public and private events. Well-known for her conservative political opinions and the controversial ways in which she defends them, Coulter has described herself as a polemicist who likes to "stir up the pot" and, unlike "broadcasters," does not "pretend to be impartial or balanced."

I cant stand Ann Coulter. She is ugly, repulsive and spiteful and used the 9/11 tragedy to sell books. Shame on her. Nice lense though..

I will never forget when Ann had to remind Bill O'Rielly (twice) that Joe McCarthy was a US Senator, and not a member of HUAC ( House UnAmerican Activities Committee).

I always like when Ann Coulter is on the Today Show. It seems there is always a little bit of controversy that makes it more entertaining.

Nice job as usual Kathy. You gotta love Ann for her entertainment factor alone.

She just loves poking sticks into the beehives of liberal's sacred orthodoxies. But unlike many, she doesn't ask for a full body cover to prevent getting stung. She swaps them away with a lighting fast intellect, one at a time, and usually ends up doing the stinging herself.

A good example is the CNN clip debating Carville. He ended up looking like the irrational partisan idealog, not her. I even felt sorry for him.....just for a split second of course.

Is she over-the-top some times? Sure, but when you are confronted with an over-the-top rights-mongering victimology all the time, some like Ann, and Kathy, are not willing to just accept it and lie down.
