The Severn River - a Maryland Scenic River.

The Severn River is designated by the General Assembly as a Maryland Scenic River. The proclamation states that the Severn is a "free-flowing river whose shoreline and related land are predominantly forested, agricultural, grassland, marshland, or swampland with a minimum of development..." The Act mandates the preservation and protection of its natural values, and
Maryland governments are required to take whatever action is necessary to protect and enhance the qualities of a river so designated.

Annapolis City Dock Reconstruction

The reconstruction of the Annapolis City Dock received the ASCE Outstanding Small Project Award for 2009.

The accelerated reconstruction of the Annapolis City Dock received the Outstanding Small Project Award for 2009 from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The project, which was nominated by Kennedy, Porter & Associates, the design team, was funded in great part by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Boating Services and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

"This is a well deserved award," said DNR Boating Director Bob Gaudette. "The City Dock project was completed in about half the time that it would have normally taken to complete a project of this magnitude, a great success. It will ensure access to Annapolis harbor for thousands of boaters, local residents, and the general public for years to come."

Annapolis Maryland Vacations

Annapolis, the capital city of Maryland is a major tourist destination. It is situated on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River, 25 miles south of Baltimore and 29 miles east of Washington D.C.

Annapolis is strategically located on the Chesapeake Bay. The city is home to some of the best preserved 18th and 19th century architecture in the country. The city is famous for its historic mansions and thriving tourist industry from the nearby cities of Baltimore and Washington DC.

Annapolis is the home of two world famous educational institutions. The US Naval Academy serves military officers while St. John's College, originally founded in 1696, educates private citizens.

Maryland state house is the oldest state house in use. The building is located at the centre of the town overlooking the web of streets. Many grand late eighteenth-century brick homes line the streets of Annapolis, dozens of pastel eighteenth-century clapboard cottages and commercial structures fill the narrow streets that run down to the waterfront.
Annapolis also boasts of a great waterfront with many shops and restaurants.

Visitors find a lot to do during their stay. Sailing and boating enthusiasts can charter a power or sailboat, watch commercial fishing boats come and go or just see the sunset from the water. The nearby Chesapeake Bay Bridge, provides spectacular views of the bay for travelers approaching Annapolis. Kite flying, beach walking, biking, swimming, summer concerts, museum tours and other recreational activities are available as well.

Annapolis is well connected by road to Baltimore and Washington DC. Walking is a good way to move about inside the city although bus and taxi service is also an option.

Annapolis Clean Marinas

In 2009 Annapolis Mayor Ellen Moyer, Delegates Ron George and Richard Sossi and Secretary John R. Griffin recognized 3 Annapolis Marinas that voluntarily adopted best management practices to certified as Clean Marinas at an awards luncheon in Annapolis.

"Every Marylander has a role in helping to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries," said Governor Martin O'Malley. "I want to commend these business owners for making a significant contribution to this effort."

Since 1999 DNR has certified 115 Clean Marinas and 24 smaller facilities designated as Clean Marina Partners. These facilities voluntarily adopt best management practices, exceeding legally required permits and plans, to reduce polluted run-off into adjacent waterways. The Maryland Clean Marina Initiative is a public-private partnership developed in response to federal legislation, requiring the State to reduce 'non-point source' pollution from marinas, boatyards, and recreational boats.

"As the capital of Maryland and the Sailing Capital of the World, Annapolis is a very popular destination for thousands of boaters a year. The Annapolis Harbormaster's Office is now playing a key role in helping the state's Clean Marina program educate the boating public on simple ways they can truly make a difference when it comes to protecting water quality and saving the Bay," Said Annapolis Mayor Ellen Moyer. "Annapolis is honored to be a Clean Marina partner in this important environmental program and we encourage every marina in the Chesapeake Bay watershed to become a clean marina."
