Can I take lessons with my child?

I encourage parents to take piano lessons, along with their children. Maybe you didn't get a chance to learn piano when you were a child, but always wanted to learn.

When the parents take piano lessons, the parents are better able to help the child because:

- An interested parent will ensure success for child.
- The parent will be able to understand the music & help the child during practice.
- The parent will be better able to encourage the child (& vice versa).
- Playing piano will become a joint project.
- The piano will provide a great bonding experience.
- Because the parent will know how the piano lessons works, the parent will be able to help the child's learning curve between lessons.
- You will have an opportunity to PLAY DUETS - which are lots of fun!

But I have No Piano!

I am often asked if it is necesssary to have a piano when starting piano lessons. The answer is "NO!" A $100 keyboard will hold a student for 1 to 1 1/2 years before a decision to purchase a piano is needed.

If interest is held, practice is done, and room and financial rquirements are met, then, the purchase of a piano can be justified.

How Much Does a Piano Cost?

Pianos can be had for $0 to $100.

But, the average piano for the beginner to intermediate student is $500 to $1200 for an upright, or $2,000 to $5,000 for a baby grand.

Practice, Practice, Practice

How much time does my child need to spend practicing?

Practicing piano can be fun and short. A Beginner student can expect to practice only 10 minutes a day in the beginning.

Everyone has 10 minutes a day.

Your child should be practicing with you in the room, because your child will be motivated by you watching him/her & your encouragement.

Setting small goals helps give children and adults a sense of continual and increasing accomplishment. Students learn a little bit at a time, and soon have a repertoire of which they can be proud.

Your children will want to practice because:

- They'll be playing tunes that they've heard before - children songs, commercials, on radio, etc.
- Tthey'll be able to pick-out pieces that they like and want to learn.
- They'll be composing their own tunes.
- They'll be motivated by their upcoming recitals

10 Minutes A Day

Can change your child's life.

Heck, your child will even
ENJOY IT!

Reading Music v. Playing By Ear

Reading music is an absolute necessity - there's just no getting around it (despite what others may say).

The musical alphabet is only 7 letters long. When you learn to read, you start by learning the alphabet. It's the same with music.

But it's easy. You (or your child) can learn to read music with just 3 short sentences and 1 word:

All Cows Eat Grass - Bass space notes

Great Big Dogs Fight Always - Bass line notes

Every Girl Buys Designer Fashions - Treble line notes

FACE - Treble space notes

It's THAT easy!

How soon will I be able to play a song for my family?

You or your child will be able to play recognizable tunes after the first few weeks of study, like the Minuet below.

Quote from "The Billboard Encyclopedia of Classical Music"

"During the Romantic period, the pianist acquired heroic status. The Polish pianist Ignacy Paderewski (1860 - 1941) became a cultural hero, the emodiiment of his divided, conquered country's continuing cultural identity at a time when it was unable to have a political one. Indeed such was his standing that, on the re-establishment of an indepenedent Poland in the new Europe drawn up in the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, he was elected its president."

When Was the Piano Invented?

The creation of the piano is attributed to Bartolomeo Cristofori (employed by the Medici's of Italy). Piano @ Wikipedia

How will Piano Lessons translate to other instruments?

Many schools require children to take another instrument (band, string ensemble, choir).

I create musicians, and then the info will translate to learning the new instrument. Your child will already be a musician.

For example, one of my students, Stephanie, who didn't even want to take piano lessons (as in, "Stephanie, why do you want to learn piano?" Stephanie: "My parents think it's a good idea.")

Within a few weeks, Stephanie caught on fire. A few months later, she had a grand piano. And now, 5 years later, she plays the major works of Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, and Beethoven.

Actually, Stephanie grew so fast musically that when she expressed an interest in playing the violin, I arranged for her to meet a highly sought -after violin teacher. Today, only 3 years later, Stephanie is the top violin student in that studio.

MORAL: Learn piano as your first instrument.

Music & Math

Music and Math are the same thing.

Both are involved in the interpretation of symbols. So, learning piano and reading music develops that part of the brain that will be working with math - and therefore planting seeds for future math success.

Also, the time signature relates to fractions and ratios.

Einstein was a pianist and violinist.
