Even Silent Era movie buffs may find it difficult to be familiar with the movies of this lovely Hollywood star. These days her movies are difficult to find, if not impossible. Yet, in the early 1900's, Annette Kellerman was a huge star.

She was the leading star in 1916 extravaganza, "A Daughter of the Gods". That movie was the first in Hollywood to cost over $1,000,000.00 to film. Unfortunately, there are no known copies remaining of "A Daughter of the Gods". So the world's first million-dollar movie has faded from memory.

This lens is dedicated to sharing a little of Annette Kellerman's long life.

Annette Kellerman at a Glance

Annette Kellerman (6 July 1887, Marrickville, New South Wales, Australia - 5 November 1975, Southport, Queensland, Australia) was an Australian professional swimmer, vaudeville and film star, writer, and advocate for the change of women's swimwear.

She is often credited for inventing the sport of synchronised swimming after her 1907 performance of the first water ballet in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

For the first time in print, this extraordinary and beautiful story tells the tale of Annette Kellerman ~ the woman who became one of the highest paid and most adored Hollywood and vaudeville stars of her day. Kellerman won audiences the world over with her trademark performances, gained fame for her dangerous swims in the English Channel, participated in a vaudeville act in which she dove into a giant glass tank, and performed underwater ballet. After starring in Hollywood's first-ever million-dollar film, she soon became a household name who drew long lines to see her on the screen in her famous, provocative costumes. This biography beautifully captures how Kellerman stole the hearts of a generation and challenged standards regarding how women should look, act, and think.

More than a Pretty Face

Annette Kellerman was born with a crippling condition in her legs, but overcame her handicap through swimming.

Champion Swimmer

In early adulthood, Annette Kellerman was an accomplished athlete. The first woman ever to attempt to swim the English Channel in August of 1905, she might not have succeeded but she sure looked good trying. At that time her own designs were fairly controversial!

Swimsuit Designer Arrested!

We have Annette Kellerman to thank for the unitard (used as a one piece swimsuit in a time women's swimsuits were modified dresses). Her design was considered indecent at the time, and Ms. Kellerman was arrested in 1907 in Boston for having the audacity to wear a one piece swimsuit to the beach. Imagine that!

Shocking!

A scene from Fox's 'A Daughter of the Gods' is most likely the first nude scene in a major motion picture. The scene was controversial for 1916.
