A Simplified Explanation Of An Anonymous Proxy

Have you heard the words anonymous proxy, proxy server or proxy site?
Many people have heard of these but haven't got a clue what they are or mean.

Here is a very simple overview of an Anonymous Proxy:

Every time you visit a website, fill in an online form or download some music, you are leaving footprints. These footprints are a cyber trail of where you have come from and what you did along the way.

You have to admit, that's pretty freaky stuff, every website you have visited can be tracked back to YOU!

This is why there are now Anonymous Proxys, but what does an anonymous proxy do?

An anonymous proxy is a tunnel (just for simplicity) this is like a normal tunnel, it can't be seen from above the ground.

What happens is this: you download a piece of software onto your computer, once you run the software it finds your IP (internet protocol) address, this is your computers address, it then goes out into the internet and finds servers which can be used. Once the servers have been found the software makes a note of all of there addresses and stores them.

Here is the fun part, with the software running in the background, every time you log onto the internet and start browsing the software give your computer an address in China, Russia, Australia or anywhere else which is far away from where you actually are.

Who Uses Anonymous Proxys and Why?

Many people use an Anonymous Proxy for browsing, offices, doctors, even the general public are now starting to use them.

There used to be a veil of mystery over anonymous browsing, people used to think that it was only done by people with something to hide.

Very recently the general public actually found out that their every move could be track back to them, so now more and more people use a similar service NOT because they are doing anything illegal BUT because they don't want to have that big brother feeling every time they log onto the internet.

Security And Speed

The benefit of course is the faster speed you can get your downloads. When you spend hours online finding music to download to your phone or MP3 player you want to know that your files are being downloaded as fast as possible.

Other reasons or benefits for using proxy sites is the hidden IP address. You can search online while making it difficult for hackers to infiltrate you computer with viruses or other damaging things.

Proxy sites have been created to protect you and make downloads move at a better pace. You probably didn't even know you where using a proxy site when you downloaded music and it gives you two or three places to download from.

Is It Legal To Surf Through Open Proxies?

As far as i can tell, the answer is yes. The primary argument against open proxies is that their owners may not have intended for them to be used by the public.

However, by running a service on a machine accessible to the public, without restricting access to that service, the machine's administrator is implicitly consenting for that service to be used by the public.

A proxy server is just like a web server, an FTP server, or any other net service: if it's running and accepting connections, it's fair game. The internet is a public network
