Anorexia Recovery : Damage to the Endocrine System

Your stomach is a complex mixture of activities and processes that normally remain in balance to provide good nutrition and overall health. Once you start to disrupt that balance by artificially starving - and in the case of bulimic tendencies - alternately binge eating - the delicate digestive processes soon start to suffer.

The Endocrine System is one of the important areas of your body that can become severely disrupted when processes in the stomach are distorted as a result of chronic eating disorders, producing the following side-effects:

Endocrine System:
- Thyroid abnormalities
- Low energy/fatigue
- Cold intolerance
- Low body temperature
- Hair thins out and may fall out completely
- Development of body hair as the body's attempt to keep warm in weird places such as the lower back, knuckles, upper arms and neck.

(The endocrine system is a system of glands that control the release of hormones. This system regulates metabolism, growth and development. It is responsible for controlling the onset of puberty and the function of body tissue. It also plays a part in regulating moods)

So you keep on down the road - hurting yourself - but the pain seems worth it - even though you know somewhere down deep that this is wrong for you.

But how to eascape ?

Anorexia Recovery : What Can You Do to Help Her or Him Recover ?

As a parent, brother, sister, uncle, aunt or friend - What can you do to help someone with an eating disorder?

So many people with eating disorders say that the thing that helped them pull free from the Hell of loneliness that is anorexia or bulimia - was the love and support of their family and friends.

If you're a sufferer - you need to draw on that support. If you are a relative or a close friend - you can really help just by being there - day after day - week after week.

It may be up to parents, siblings and friends to see the symptoms and gently bring them into a conversation. But watch out - any challenge related to food, weight loss, eating habits or exercise will be hotly denied.

Eating disorder sufferers strongly protect their eating secrets with denials.

Anorexia Recovery : The Long Road Back to Health

Anorexia is a tough taskmaster. But it's really satisfying when you realize you are getting better from the eating disorder that has ruled your life for so long.

"My strange eating habits were a comfort to me for so many years. It's weird really. I was stealing my own health - but somehow it felt the right thing to do. And oddly, it didn't seem a big deal.
I would work hard to make sure nobody knew what I was doing. The secrecy was all part of the space I lived in.

Now I am soooo much better. My real friends stuck with me during the come-back months. And my family was always there with a hug, a touch and a smile. That was really a huge part of what kept me going."
