Birdwatching in Antarctica with Grandma

Ranked #3,128 in Pets & Animals, #79,381 overall

Why go to Antarctica? The answer is simple: Antarctica is nature in its purest state.

Antarctica is a continent located literally at the bottom of the world. The weather there is extremely cold. Antarctica is almost completely covered by ice and snow for much of the year. Very few people live there, except in the small towns of McMurdo and Palmer on the seashore. There is a science station at the South Pole where experiments are done relating mostly to weather and space exploration.

Of the 35 species of seabirds that live south of the Antarctic Convergence, only 19 species breed on the Antarctic continent itself.

By the way, how many species of penguins are there in the world?  How many can you name?

Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, highest (on average), and driest continent; during summer, more solar radiation reaches the surface at the South Pole than is received at the Equator in an equivalent period; mostly uninhabitable. Almost the entire continent is covered with ice and snow. If all of the ice were to melt, it is estimated that the sea level throughout the world would rise by 200 ft. ---------------------------------------------

Unfortunately for penguins, the earth's temperatures are rising at an alarming rate and the ice at the polar caps is melting. In Antarctica, home to the famous Emperor Penguin, the annual melting season has been extended by as much as 3 weeks in recent decades.

Birds-Wildlife of Antarctica
With the end of the long polar winter comes the arrival of millions of seabirds to breed. First to arrive are the Adelie penguins who have walked as much as 50 kilometers across the sea ice to reach their nesting grounds. They are followed soon after by the petrels and skuas, flying in from the open sea. Of the 35 species of seabirds that live south of the Antarctic Convergence, only 19 species breed on the Antarctic continent itself. Probably 100 million or more birds breed along the coast and offshore islands of Antarctica.
