Anthony Altorenna's Lensography

Ranked #645 in Squidoo Community, #85,904 overall

It's funny how life's twists and turns become a journey over time. Looking back, it is difficult to see how all of those little everyday decisions add up into a lifetime. For me, I hope I'm only halfway through my own personal journey - or maybe, a little less than halfway.

As my Squidoo bio says: A technical writer by day, I enjoy creating lenses on topics of personal interest including woodworking, fishing & gardening. I have several different hobbies (I'm seldom bored) and enjoy the process of creating new projects and then writing about them. Most of the photos in my articles were taken to illustrate the ideas or showcase the finished projects in use around my yard.
Too young for Woodstock, but just the right age for the Hey Days of the Jersey Shore when boardwalk arcades, fast cars and seashore bars ruled the scene from Sea Bright down Ocean Ave to the Long Branch Pier, on to West End and then down the coast to Brielle. And of course, the nucleus was Asbury Park. Too many nights were spent cruising the Circuit, circling endlessly between Kingsley and Ocean Avenues, or stopping by the Stone Pony where Southside Johnny & the Jukes played three nights a week. After the boardwalk and the bars closed down, we'd often just hang out on the beach.

And every now and then, the Boss made an appearance. Those lucky enough to be there late enough might catch him sitting in for a song or two with one of the local bands.

type=textCollege, gainful employment and marriage took me up to New England, away from the beach but into the quiet and peaceful beauty of the woods.

A new house on ten wooded acres with lots of boulders, granite outcroppings and trees provided the starting point for our backyard retreat. Deer and turkeys roamed our property, along with many other animals and birds.

We hung birdhouses and birdfeeders, put out a salt lick and cracked corn, and built a small pond.
type=textOver time, we carved out a few flower and vegetable beds, digging out rocks from nearly every hole whenever we tried to plant anything, which became small stonewalls and borders along pea stone paths. Along with the native plants, we added many different varieties of perennials and flowering shrubs, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apple trees and more. After twenty years, our wildlife friendly yard is home to flying squirrels and snakes, toads and wood frogs, birds from chickadees to woodpeckers to kestrels and hawks, bats and all kinds of butterflies, bugs and countless other little critters. Most are welcomed, and nearly all are at least tolerated.

Many of our backyard and DIY projects are documented in my lenses, and here are a few of my favorites. Though new to Squidoo, I have tried to emulate the quality of featured lensmasters while retaining my utilitarian 'how to' style. As you will see from my lenses, most of my writing and photos center around my hobbies: tending to our wildlife friendly property, making birdhouses and fishing.

Feeding the Birds

We are fortunate to live in area with lots of feathered visitors, and we do our best to encourage many types of birds to take up residence. Bluebirds, orioles and gold finches are seasonal visitors, raising new broods in our yard every spring. Chickadees, titmouses (titmice?), cardinals, blue jays, mourning doves, downy woodpeckers, pilated woodpeckers, wild turkeys and many other smaller birds make daily appearances at our feeders.

Fishing Lenses

Fishing in New England is mostly a summertime activity, and we are fortunate to have great fishing locations to catch stripers, blues, fluke and flounder. Freshwater fishing focuses on trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass. We keep an occasional fish for dinner, but mostly practice Catch & Release fishing.

And We Have Chickens Too!

What started as a small project with our kids has grown into another backyard hobby. Six cute little Easter chicks and a small backyard chicken coop has grown into a flock of 20 hens of different varieties (laying eggs of different sizes and colors), requiring several coop expansions and additions. You cannot beat a fresh egg for breakfast!

I'm just glad that life's little twist and turns brought you to Squidoo Anthony. I'm seeing that you have some additions here. I love what I wrote to you when I was before and am going to repeat it, just like I'm repeating a blessing.

I like your lensography very much, its filled with the love of nature by a man that fits it all together like a song. Its really something to look at one's own showcase to see the picture that it paints of the person who's heart, and work it represents. ~ Blessed!

Congratulations on becoming Squid Angel Anthony! And, thank you very much for the blessing on my lens that you once gave a Purple Star. This is a blessing that touches my heart. ~ Have fun and enjoy sprinkling angel dust, and good will come back to you.

Thank you for sharing yourself and this little patch of paradise. I grew up with chickens (which we called 'chooks') and was especially in awe of your beautiful hen house. My kids love getting to nanny and pa's house to feed the chooks and collect the eggs. I refuse to buy any that aren't free range... they're silly things but I have a soft spot for chooks! Lovely lens!
