Berlin (dpa) - Berliners are certain to turn out in their thousands to welcome US presidential contender Barack Obama when he speaks in the German capital next week.

After seven years of George W Bush - a deeply unpopular US president in Germany - Europeans are drinking in the Illinois senator's message of change.

"People here see him almost as a political redeemer after seven years of Bush," says political analyst Jan Techau of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), although he warns that sustaining the euphoria will be difficult.

It was relatively easy for Europeans to avoid the difficult issues in the Western Alliance, given Bush's poor reputation, but a president Obama could bring them to the fore again, Techau believes.

Indications from Obama's entourage are that the Illinois senator will offer Europeans a renewed partnership with the United States, but also that he will call for a greater contribution on the thornier problems facing the Western alliance.

"Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and missile defence - these are the issues, although he hasn't named them," Techau says.

"This will be the most important part of the speech. Europeans are going to find out whether the love affair with Obama is going to be sustainable."

Few in Berlin now believe the Democratic candidate will speak against the backdrop of the Brandenburg Gate after Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her disapproval. Analysts see Obama as too politically savvy to give any cause for offence in this regard.

And there are several other possibilities.

John F Kennedy made his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech at Rathaus Schoeneberg, a large city hall in the west of the city when he visited as US president in 1963, just two years after the Berlin Wall went up.

The newly rebuilt Potsdamer Platz that lay right on the East-West faultline could form a backdrop reflecting the new and united Berlin.

And there's always the highly symbolic Tempelhof Airport, where US pilots offloaded thousands of tons of supplies to keep the city going through the Soviet blockade soon after World War II.

Obama's campaign team originally wanted the Brandenburg Gate, but in the light of the domestic controversy in Germany, Obama told US reporters in remarks published in the New York Times: "I don't want the venue to be a distraction."

Through her spokesmen, Merkel made clear she regarded the gate, where President Ronald Reagan issued his 1987 call to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall," as unsuitable as a venue for a foreign election campaign speech.

Obama does have to be careful about the associations he awakens. "He's not the president yet, but he has to send presidential signals," Techau notes.

And the German analyst is under no illusions about the true purpose of the visit.

Where Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier are keen on the visit as positioning Germany, along with Britain and France, as a top European destination for a potential US president, Obama has his eye fixed firmly on the US electorate.

"For Obama, almost nothing in this trip has to do with Europe. It has all to do with the home front. He wants great pictures in front of the big symbolic buildings in Europe that Americans know," Techau says.

"He wants TV pictures showing Europeans going crazy about him, showing they're expecting change and eagerly anticipating his new style."

In Germany he is guaranteed an enthusiastic reception. A recent poll showed 72 per cent would back an Obama presidency, against just 11 per cent for Obama's Republican rival, John McCain.

A secondary aim is to help establish the kind of foreign policy credentials voters in the US expect from their presidents.

Obama will use the trip to size up the main European leaders on a personal level.

Here, party politics are of minimal significance. The fact that Merkel is a Christian Democrat and thus more in tune with Republican thinking plays no role.

"Chemistry is much more important than party affiliation," Techau says.
