January 2012 Jobs Report - 243,000 jobs added - Unemployment rate falls to 8.3%

23 consecutive months of job growth under the Obama administration. Highest amount of private sector jobs added since 2005.

Charts Below shows jobs decline during the recession in 2008, and then the recovery under Obama which starts in earnest about 6 months into his term as president. Looking at the unemployment numbers alone does not tell the whole story. Jobs were in FREE FALL, and there is no doubt that the recovery is well under way. January numbers far exceeded expectations, showing that growth is sustained. Second chart shows how the employment rate breaks down demographically. You can see the improvement over time.

Revisions to the payrolls figures showed 180,000 more jobs were created last year than previously believed.

Mild winter weather boosted employment last month in construction, which added 21,000 jobs after a 31,000 increase in December. Manufacturing payrolls surged 50,000, the largest gain in a year, after rising 32,000 the prior month.

Overall, the goods-producing sector added 81,000 jobs last month, the most since January 2006. Transportation and warehousing employment increased 13,100.

Retail employment rose 10,500 after gaining 6,200 in December. Temporary help services jumped 20,100 after rising 8,300, a potentially good sign for future permanent hiring.

Powell Endorses Obama

Barack Obama pushed further into Republican turf on Sunday, winning the endorsement of retired Gen. Colin Powell and energizing a crowd at a packed arena near Fort Bragg.

Mr. Obama's announcement of the news ignited an eruption of applause at Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville. Yet it's unclear how meaningful the endorsement will be among active-duty and retired members of the military, who tend to vote Republican.

Polls have consistently shown they favor John McCain, a former Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, over Mr. Obama.

But campaign officials insist the Democratic nominee is doing well among military voters, particularly in states such as North Carolina, where he now leads Mr. McCain by several points in recent surveys.

"With so many great men and women from Fayetteville serving in our military, this is a city and a state that knows something about great soldiers," Mr. Obama told the crowd of 10,200. "This morning, a great soldier, a great statesman and a great American has endorsed my campaign."           Veterans for Obama Button

Mr. Powell's endorsement came with an added bonus for Mr. Obama: The former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said he was troubled by the negative tone of Mr. McCain's campaign. Mr. Powell, who expressed disaffection with his party's tilt to the right, called Mr. Obama a "transformational figure."

Mr. McCain and his surrogates have implied in recent days that Mr. Obama is a socialist and tried to highlight the Democrat's ties to Bill Ayers, a 1960s radical and former member of the Weather Underground.

"I think this goes too far, and I think it has made the McCain campaign look a little narrow," Mr. Powell said on NBC's Meet the Press.

He also condemned what he called suggestions by "senior members of my own party" that Mr. Obama is a Muslim.

"But the really right answer is, what if he was?" Mr. Powell said. "Is there anything wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer is no, that's not America."

David Axelrod, Mr. Obama's chief strategist, said the endorsement could help attract moderates dissatisfied with the direction of the GOP.

Several attendees at Sunday's rally said they cheered the Powell endorsement.

"We were just overwhelmed by it," said Valarie Benford, a former Army specialist whose husband is a soldier at Fort Bragg. In an Obama administration, she added, "We're going to look out for the soldiers, we're going to get this war done, and we're going to get our troops home."
