Preaching Against Mental Health Stigma

Yes, I look like a maniac in that picture, but that's okay, because I am stigma free. You see, since I was a kid I was the 'head case' because I had something no one knew much about, Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It started about the time I was nine years old.

Kill the Stigma

If you develop heart trouble, what do you do?

If you develop liver trouble, what do you do?

If you develop a problem with any organ of your body, what do you do?

You go to the doctor. Are you ashamed? No.

Then why is it, when your brain, which is the most important organ in your body, do you refuse to seek help, and let your choice about your own health, be left up to stigma.

That doesn't make any sense to me. Does it to you?

Did You Know?

  • Did you know That Worry And Anxiety Can Lead To Infertility?
  • One in four people have an anxiety disorder.
  • One in ten people have a form of a phobia.
  • One in 50 people have OCD.
  • Anxiety & depression often exist together.
  • Anxiety may cause significant changes in how your body functions.
  • Anxiety does not discriminate; children as well as the elderly can experience anxiety.

Life Transformed

What Was I Waiting For?

When I was nine years old I sat on my cool, curved slide, that was just one of the many things that made my yard, the best play yard on the block. Every day kids filled the yard and we all had fun.

One day I was sitting on that slide around sunset, feeling pretty darn good about myself when it hit me, the sadness, the full existential weight of hopelessness and sadness in all the world descended onto my nine year old shoulders.

I started to cry.

That set my parents on a mission to find out why their perfectly normal nine year old son was now a very sad little boy.

Forty-one years later I am a fifty year old man who only recently was given the right combination of medications. What does that mean? It means that I am free of anxiety, and the depression that ran underneath all the anxiety.

Time and experience with anxiety attacks has taught me that they are biochemcial in nature, and often don't have their root in a particular pattern of thought. As my doctor said, "It's in your hardwiring."

It is a mistake, however, to assume that Cognitive Therapy has nothing to offer. When anxiety attacks came for me, my mind would latch onto almost anything that maybe could make sense of why such a horrible thing was happening to me.

Needless to say, I was always wrong about the reason for my anxiety attack. It wasn't until

Ladies and Gentlemen, I will continue to update this tomorrow, right now it's time to go watch a movie. So until then, TA Ta!
