When do you need antibiotics for sinus infection?

In most cases, you don't need antibiotics for sinus infection, also known as sinusitis.

Most sinus infections are caused by viruses and antibiotics do not help infections caused by viral inflammation.

25 million people a year go to the doctor looking for sinus pressure relief, and of those, 90% are given a prescription to antibiotics. More than likely, those antibiotics do no more than shave a day off of the infection time.

Studies show that neither antibiotics or steroid sprays offer much help to adults with sinus infections.

There are many over the counter medications that will temporarily ease the symptoms of an infection, such as nasal congestion and head pain or pressure, but there is no medication that will get rid of a viral sinus infection. The only solution is to wait it out.

If you're like millions of others, who have 'waited it out' every year, for years, then take action!

How do you know if the sinus infection is caused by bacteria or a virus?

Most sinus infections start out as a complication from an allergic or viral infection such as the common cold.

If the pain and discomfort continues for seven to ten days, the infection could become bacterial. Symptoms of a bacterial infection include a fever of 101 or higher, dark, yellow or green mucus, nasal congestion, and facial pain behind your eyes and cheeks, around your forehead, and within your teeth.

Symptoms may appear to temporarily improve, and then worsen. Fatigue, ear and head pain, cough, and bad breath are also common symptoms.

What types of antibiotics are used to treat sinus infections?

If a sinus infection is in fact caused by bacteria, there are many types of antibiotics that can be used to treat it. Two very popular name brands are Amoxicillin, and Levaquin.

Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is a type of penicillin and is used to treat a broad range of bacteria. A typical dosage for sinus infection is 500 MG twice daily for ten to fourteen days. It should be taken with food to avoid upset stomach. Amoxicillin should not be used if you are allergic to penicillin type drugs.

Levaquin

Levaquin is in a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, and is also a broad spectrum drug used to treat lung, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections among other things. The typical dosage of Levaquin for sinus infections is 500 MG daily for ten to fourteen days.

The drug has recently come under attack due to being linked to a serious, adverse side effect. Levaquin can cause swelling or tearing of the tendons in your body, specifically the Achilles tendon in the heal of the foot.

Have antibiotics worked for you?

Most antibiotics are prescribed to be taken for 10 to 14 days, about the same amount of time it takes for a cold or infection to clear up on its on. Are the antibiotics really working or is your cold or infection just running its course, making the potentially dangerous antibiotic look like the hero?

Use Caution When Taking Antibiotics for Sinus Infections

Antibiotics should be taken for the full duration prescribed by your doctor. You should not take antibiotics or any other prescription medication unless it is prescribed specifically for you.

Also, your doctor should test you and be sure that you have a bacterial infection before prescribing antibiotics.

If antibiotics are misused and taken too often, for ailments caused by fungal or viral infections instead of bacterial infections, the bacteria can become resistant to the antibiotic, rendering the medication useless.

Use caution when taking antibiotics for sinus infections.
