Alternative to anti-depressants
New studies and trials are constantly published to show the benefits, or otherwise, of the use of antidepressants. (To take your mind off it, should there be a hyphen in anti-depressants or not?).
There is no doubt that the Western world is wedded to the pharmaceutical solution of Prozac and other similar chemical antidepressants. So why, if they are so wonderful, is the Eastern world not similarly burdened with such chemical coshes but rely instead on alternative antidepressant therapies?
Perhaps they know something that we in the West do not - or is it that we (conveniently for the pharmaceutical industry) are simply brainwashed to accept these hard-core solutions?
Here at The Paloma Centre in Banbury we offer alternative antidepressant therapy based upon Hypnotherapy, Meridian Energy Therapies and CBT which is demonstrably effective. Why not call us on 01295 277686 and discuss your own personal concerns.
Antidepressants are not the only answer.
Antidepressants only deal with the symptoms.
Therapy deals with the underlying issues which, when resolved, can eliminate the need for generalised chemical antidepressants.
The causes for depression are specific to the individual - so the therapy should be as well!

CBT - a useful therapy for depression
Alternative therapies for "depression"
As a therapist I recommend what I think is in the best interest of my client, the medical profession do not even consider most solutions - only those solutions which co-incide with the interests of the pharmaceutical industry.
It is true that of late NICE has allowed the use of CBT for Depression within the NHS, not that CBT is necessarily the best way forward for most people suffering with depression. As an anti-depressant it is of limited use on its own, relying as it does on building upon logical conclusions.
Unfortunately, Depression often has a far higher emotional, or subjective, component than logical and simply will not respond to such inappropriate "treatment". In fairness to the GP, he has a limited armoury to bring to bear, once he has prescribed antidepressants or CBT he has nowhere else to go.
However, in the private sector we have a wide variety of more appropriate therapies, therapies without side effects, more natural therapies and where the therapy can be delivered according to the specific needs of the individual client, addressing their own unique requirements, a truly holistic approach.
If you wish to discuss your own concerns for anti-depression therapy do call us and talk them through on 01295 277686 or visit our website at The Paloma Centre

- Very interesting piece. I know the research tide is turning against antidepressants--but I still find that my clients who are placed on them tend to have results they weren't getting without them. Sometimes it's just hard to know what the right thing is to do to fully alleviate the terrible suffering of the depressed person.

- You're so right about the Western world being over medicated. As a child I don't remember seeing pharmacies on every street corner the way you do now.

- I do believe that anti-depressants have a use in acutely suicidal patients, it gets them 'over the hump' so to say. However, depression has a high rate of recurrence, which begs the question, 'Did we resolve the root cause?' The highest rate of success seems to be with therapy and medication combined (weaning onto and off of medication slowly is important). With the right therapist and open communication, I feel the root causes can be dealt with and the person is (we hope) healed. I certainly believe in the power of therapy as prevention of future episodes of depression. It is not a sign of weakness to suffer depression nor should anyone feel ashamed of it. It is as real as a broken leg and it is highly treatable.

- I actually abhor antidepressants. They are too addictive and have too many side effects. Instead, I prefer using natural herbs and supplements like Kava or 5-HTP.
I've been wanting to try CBT for a while. I've heard it works wonders, but I've had a hard time finding a therapist that specializes in it.
