Antique Barn Door Hinges

Barn Door HingesIf you are looking for barn door rollers and hinges for use on your barn, many manufacturers recommend looking at the size of your barn doors and the weight of the doors, which can go up to 5,000 pounds.

Be sure to measure your doors carefully before choosing. Barn hinges and rollers should be durable, so be sure to look for a good warranty on parts and pay attention to what material is used if you are ordering new barn door hinges or hardware. Some barn hinges and rollers available on Amazon have been reviewed by real customers, which is always helpful when making your choice.

Of course if you are buying antique barn door rollers or hinges a warranty doesn't apply. But you still need to make sure its the right size and type of rollers for use on the barn door track you have. Hinges don't need to match exactly to what was originally used on the barn door, however they still need be made to hold the same amount of weight.

Suppliers of Vintage Barn Door Rollers & Hinges

Vintage Barn Door Rollers

There are actually companies that specialize in "recycling" old building materials and parts by restoring and reselling them. They can be a good source of vintage rollers and hinges that you actually intend to use. Once such company is Vintage Timber, which deconstructs old buildings and save the materials that still look usable. Other sites like eBay and Craigslist might also be a source of old barn door rollers and hinges.

My Family's Barn

I grew up in the midwest in a small town. My grandmother lived 3 miles from town on the farm, where us kids would spend our Saturdays. My dad would tend to the cows, my uncles farmed the land, and my grandmother lived in the farmhouse. I have very fond memories of playing in the barn.

My brother, sister, and I would run up the stairs to the hay loft and play for hours. We'd walk along the grain bins, occasionally playing in the corn or soy beans. Looking back on it now, I can't believe the dangerous things we used to do while we were out on the farm. My brother and I would also climb up a tree on the outside of the barn and sit on the roof of the attached cow shed. We could then see out in the fields to wherever my dad was working.

I also remember an old medicine cabinet in the barn, which was half way up the stairs to the hay loft. I remember opening the door to the medicine cabinet and a mouse jumping out of its nest at me.

My dad told us kids a story about how when he and his brothers and sister were growing up on the farm, they once opened the hay door, which was a trap door on the second story floor. You would open the door to throw hay bales down to the first floor of the barn. They opened the door, then covered it up with hay, and someone got their only sister to chase after one of the brothers. My aunt, chasing after my uncle, stepped right into the open hay loft door, falling straight down to the first floor! She was OK, but boy was she mad.

I can only imagine all the other stories that barn would tell if it could talk! All the generations of kids in my family who have played and worked in that barn. My grandmother has passed on, but the farm is still in my family. Currently my uncle and aunt live in the farmhouse, and my other uncle still farms the land. The homestead has been in my family for more than 120 years.
