Ever looked at an old hand made vase and wondered about it history? Here is AntiquesAvenues basic guide to British Art Pottery

What makes a great piece of art pottery

Art pottery is a personal taste and each collector has ideas about what makes a great art pot. Here are some points for consideration ( in no particular order) when choosing a pot - I will be examining these in more detail over the next week or two.
  1. Quality of decoration
  2. Quality of potting
  3. Size & Weight
  4. Who made it?
  5. Rarity
  6. Age
  7. Material
  8. Colour
  9. Country of Origin
  10. Style
  11. Shape / Form
  12. Condition

Quality of Decoration

Lets look at two art pots from the same factory to compare how the quailty of decoration affects a pieces desirability. These two were both made by the Aller Vale company in Devon. Aller Vale were only operational between 1887 and 1901 and so these pieces both date from arround the same time.

Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco pottery

A pictorial guide

The Arts & Crafts Movement

Arts & Crafts Pottery started at the end of the 19th Century and had its heyday in the early 1900s. Here you can see examples from the Potteries in Devon & Cornwall as well as a Wedgwood Plate

Art Nouveau Pottery

Two examples of art nouveau pottery by Mintons from their secessionist ware range, a Bretby vase & a beautiful continental lady tobacco jar. Pottery in the art Nouveau style was mainly produced from 1900 to 1920

Art Deco Pottery All these examples are British made: From left to right, top to bottom: Royal Doulton, Wade, Maling, unidentified, Brentleigh, Poole

Note the predominant colour themes in the art deco pottery, these are bright primary colours - red, blue, orange & green. Lots of bold angular shapes
