Getting Started In Collecting Antique Fishing Lures

Ah antique fishing lures. I remember when as a boy I inherited my grandfathers tackle box. It might as well been a treasure chest full of gold. Sure all those old fishing lures were banged up, scratched, and in really bad shape, but the joy and wonder looking at all those vintage fishing lures got me hooked, pardon the pun.

I believe that our hobby of collecting antique lures is filled with as much history as our country itself. All the stores of fishing tales gone by, are in part connected to those old fishing lures and your grandfathers tackle box. It's steeped in history and story.

Now the reasons you you started collecting or want to collect antique fishing lures are yours and yours alone, but that's what makes it fun and so enjoyable. As for me it takes me back to the day I got my grad daddies tackle box, and even today when I spy that Heddon gem I've been looking for, I am five years old once again and flipping through that old beat up tackle box.

Collecting Antique Fishing Lures 101

Learning the basic behind collecting old fishing lures

For those interested in getting started learning about collecting fishing lures, by first suggestion is to read about it first before heading down to your local antique auction sale, or to a fishing tackle trade show. Why because it is very easy to be swayed by old fishing lures and land up paying more then their "true value". Just because a fishing lure is old doesn't mean it it'll fetch top dollar.

That is why I highly recommend you get a couple of the books suggested belowand get acquainted with everything you can learn about the hobby of collecting antique fishing lures.

Learn First Buy Second Holds very true when it comes to buying old fishing lures, this will save you from getting burned in the end.

My first suggestion is As a beginner, you have no business buying any old fishing lure priced over $30 until you have attended at least one major tackle show.

My first rule of thumb is Learn to Know what the authentic paint is and what a repaint looks like.

Carry with you a small pocket Uv light and a 10x magnifying loop on you at all times. This will help in identifying "repaints" and cracks and flakes which help grade the fishing lure. If you learn one thing then this is it, learn to identify original authentic paint jobs.

With that said here are a few pointers in keeping and maintaining your collections once you start.

  • Store the antique fishing lures in an area away from strong natural or artificial light. This light will affect the quality of the painted surface over time, reducing the value of the piece.

  • Put the fishing lures in a humidity-controlled area to prevent foxing and rust. Maintain a good airflow around the lures and keep the humidity around 70 percent.

  • Keep your collection safe store them locked in a fire-proof safe for protection from fire and theft.

  • Insects can be a real problem with boxes. Store them carefully and do not use commercial insecticides any where near your old fishing lures and boxes. In fact do not store your collection near any chemicals period. You don't want to risk a chance spill.

Old Fishing Lures Identification and Tackle Guide

Our Top Pick For Learning About Collecting Antique Fishing Lures

The #1 "MUST HAVE" Reference book on collecting antique fishing lures. Recently voted THE BEST REFERENCE BOOK in a poll taken among lure collectors.

Old Fishing Lures & Tackle: Identification & Value Guide

Amazon Price: $23.09 (as of 12/07/2009)Buy Now

As a lure collector, I have several old fishing lure identification guides.
But this book gets used more than the rest, simply because it is more an an antique fishing lure identification guide than a Value guide. Yes the book does show the value of the old fishing lures but that pricing guide is what collectors call "book value" and of course not not reflect current auction values.

But this book contains way more information on the old fishing lures themselves the, companies that made them etc, more then any other fishing ID book.

If you are looking for a complete library (if you want almost any antique fishing lure identification at your fingertips--or in your head , as you learn about them all--), then you should definitely need to buy this book.

This book is not the most detailed on the subject of collecting antique fishing lures. What it is, is a great collection of color images with information on the lures and companies themselves. Why did we pick it then as our second choice for best books to own about old fishing lures? because the the quality of the pictures are incredible.

Set this book on your coffee table and your guests are instantly "hooked". If you are a collector or simply enjoy angling history, this one is definitely a "MUST HAVE"

Warman's Fishing Lure Field Guide

The number one reason why i include this book as our third choice in collecting vintage fishing lures can be summed up in two words, "Garage Sales".

This book is an excellent tuck in your back pocket field guide for reference when your out with the your spouse during those saturday morning garage sale hunts. You never know when you spy that Heddon gem, and you want to look it up and make sure you found a deal.

This field guide is a must own for that purpose alone. No serious old fishing lure collector would be complete without his copy of Warman's Fishing Lure Field Guide

How to Grade Antique Fishing Lures

A crucial aspect to learn about collecting vintage fishing lures is knowing how to grade them.

Learning to grade antique fishing lures is crucial if you want to insure you pay the right price for an old fishing lure. But, everyone has difficulty grading old fishing lures because grading really is subjective.

Visual values vary considerably from person to person But will add being "old" is no excuse for poor condition. I don't know how many time I've heard a guy say in a trade show, "these lures are over 80 years old you know, so you have to expect a few chips and scrapes".

My response to that is ," Well that may be true but but the price will have to adjust for any chips and scrapes. If you've got chips and scrapes, then we are not talking about excellent condition or excellent prices now are we?"

Here's a breakdown of some of the terms and grades of old vintage fishing lures.

Mint or New In The Box: Mint means exactly that, perfect, untouched, new, unfished.Mint is new from the factory. New! No flaws whatever, even the varnish is still completely clear.

Excellent : Excellent means an almost brand new lure. It has some minor, and I do mean minor, defects like tiny pointers or tiny varnish flake or two. Most of these lures will as well never have seen the water. Excellent means there is nothing missing in the paint, and the varnish is still clear.

Very Good. One major element that will down grade a lure will be the quality of its paint. Paints chips being the major cause of an old fishing lure being down graded to very good. Now every good also means that the fishing lure isn't riddled with them either, very good means exactly that, very good. A few paint chips, light foxing in the varnish, a few cracks and lines in the varnish.

Good to Average Large areas of varnish flakes, scrapes and pointers in the wood. A pointer is a small indentation made by the hook in the lure body, any more then a few would place place the lure in this grade.

Anything less then this falls into Poor to Average at best and is best avoided by the serious collector.

Russell E. Lewis Books on Collecting Antique Fishing Lures

Russell E. Lewis is well known among fishing lure collectors

Here is a list of Russell E. Lewis books about collecting vintage old fishing lures. Russell E. Lewis is well known among the collectors and no site would be complete without listing his works.

Some collectors enjoy his books others and the main reason why I am including them here and not in our top picks for learning about collecting old fishing lures is because they feature more information about the lures and lack the price guides which are invaluable to today's collector.

Still a great author and lots of great information about old fishing lures, having a few of Russell E. Lewis books on your shelf sure doesn't hurt.
